Reading discussion.

  • Homework: Read Unit One description. Be sure to have read the assignment descriptions before you come to class so the discussion doesn’t have you starting from scratch in trying to understand.  You’ll be introduced to the Rhetorical Situation and we’ll start to deconstruct an artifact as an example.

We’ll make sense of the readings as they help us approach rhetorical analysis and also understand the choices we might make in our lives. We’ll look at additional tools for analysis. We’ll do some practice rhetorical analysis, too!

Homework: Post links and/or videos/images of your Unit One artifact ideas on your RCL blog. Not a bad idea to have a back up plan, too.

Friday, September 9

First Passion Blog Post Due by 8am.

We’ll discuss your artifact ideas for Unit One. We’ll have a discussion of the difference between the job of the speech and essay and what thesis statements for each should look like.

We’ll view and compare two short presidential addresses and do a bit of rhetorical analysis.

  • Homework: For Monday, be prepared to workshop your Civic Artifact speech with peers. Make note of elements you intend to address along with drafting a thesis statement that makes a claim about the artifact’s goals and effectiveness.
  • Homework: Post rough outline of Civic Artifact speech and repost its artifact alongside. Due by 8am Monday, 9/12.
  • Homework: Read “Providing Feedback” Keyword.

Monday, September 12

In class, we’ll workshop your Civic Artifact speech. You should be ready to highlight elements you intend to address and have a draft of a thesis statement that makes a claim about the artifact’s goals and effectiveness. We’ll start by looking at some thesis statement examples, talking through ideas and arrangement, and then use the rest of the class for workshopping with peers.

  • Homework: Continue working on thesis statements, outlines for your presentation, and continue thinking about the rhetorical elements of the artifacts you’ve chosen for your paper.

 

Wednesday, September 14

Today’s class will focus on your Rhetorical Analysis Essay. We will look at examples of paired artifacts, find elements for comparison, and practice articulating them using the terminology we’ve discussed so far in class. To prepare, read this student essay: Merck and HSE Ireland Essay FINAL

  • Homework: Post second Passion blog by 8am, Friday, 9/17. Draft a thesis statement for your essay.
  • Homework: Read student essay.

Friday, September 16

Passion blog #2 due by 8am.

We’ll look at Passion Blogs and a couple thesis statement draft examples.

Homework: Start drafting an outline for your paper. Keep working on your speech outline.

Monday, September 19

Workshop: Outlining your Rhetorical Analysis Essay; discussion of essay goals, theses, organization. Discussion of elements of student sample paper.

  • Homework: Continue working on outline of paper; start writing; be sure each main idea is comprised of an analytical claim/sentence. Post drafts on your RCL blog for random review on Wednesday in class.

Discussion about presentations: timing, visuals, notecards, etc.

  • Homework: Practice speeches (visit Speaking Center!) and work on Rhetorical Analysis draft.
