DREAM

The common, often ignorant, stereotype people think of when they hear the word “Hispanic” is usually drunk, lazy, and uneducated. This is a great misconception.

Most Hispanics in the US today are more than willing to further their education.

Since the early 2000s, there has been a proposal to help the minorities, Latinos especially, get a college degree. This proposal is called the DREAM Act, which is an acronym for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors.

Basically, this act has been trying to pass for years, but finally has reached an all-time high this year. This act allows undocumented immigrants who have been in the US for at least five years to continue their education in a any college or institution in the US. There are also other requirements to this act, which include but are not limited to, showing a good, moral character, having graduated from a US high school, having arrived in the US as a minor, and seeking a degree higher to that of a high school diploma/GED. Many immigrant student fall under this category, but unfortunately this act has not passed yet.

Many immigrants are not able to further their education due to the high costs of colleges and universities. Passing the DREAM Act would not only facilitate this process, but also ensure a stable future for immigrants while building a path to residency, and eventually citizenship.

Now, there is a version of the DREAM Act that President Obama passed just last year. This process is called deferred action. It allows young immigrants to legally work in the US, primarily designed for students to essentially save up the money and earn their way.

Obama clearly allows this and says, “It is only fair for everyone to work their way up to citizenship.” This is a fair process that immensely helps our future Americans.

I think that the DREAM act is a good idea…I don’t see the problem in people wanting to further their education. Americans often don’t like immigrants because they think immigrants come here to steal American jobs and work for low pay. But that clearly isn’t the case if so many of them are trying to get a college education. I think people just need to be more open-minded in general and to stop trying to push out people who can help make the country better.
