Accomplishments:

  • Prof Dev
    • MOOC on Evolution
      • Finished the 1st graded quiz without issue
      • Instructor is saying this week is more difficult
        • from my experience so far, I agree.

    • MOOC on Game Theory

    • MOOC on Personal Finance starts 1/14/13
      • I originally signed up for this course then unenrolled. But I’m interested in what this course entails. It almost seems like advice you would get from a financial planner. It would be interesting to see these type of self-help courses become more ubiquitous.

Reflection 1/14/13 – 1/18/13

Accomplishments:

  • Prof Dev
    • MOOC on Evolution
      • Received a note about getting a certificate from the course. There is a pricing structure for the course for more heightened certification. Guess this is how these free courses are eventually going to run.
      • Plan to watch the next round of videos and take the first graded assessment this week.
    • MOOC on Game Theory
      • Received note that we are now allowed to take the first assessment up to 50 X only for the first one. Not really sure that the authors of the course are really thinking about why people are interested in the course. Why put up artificial barriers?
    • MOOC on Personal Finance starts 1/14/13
      • I originally signed up for this course then unenrolled. But I’m interested in what this course entails. It almost seems like advice you would get from a financial planner. It would be interesting to see these type of self-help courses become more ubiquitous.

Reflection 1/7/13 – 1/11/13

Accomplishments:

  • Prof Dev
    • Started MOOC on Evolution on Friday 1/4
      • 1st quiz came open on 1/7. I tried it on 1/8 to find that it is a practice exam that is not graded.
    • Started MOOC on Game Theory on 1/7
      • Really liked the simulation about packet switching
        • There were two choices – C (correct implementation) & D (defective implementation). Since there are two players, there are four outcomes
          • CC – 1 ms delay for both
          • CD – 4 ms delay for C, no delay for D
          • DC – no delay for D, 4 ms delay for C
          • DD – 3 ms delay for both
        • Found out later that based upon the Nash Equilibrium that the best choice was to choose defective. This is mostly because if you choose correct there are two ways that maximize your delay time
        • There were several other simulations that are working as data collection/research to teach the principles of Nash-Equilibrium. These simulations are great. It seems like a win-win to me because they get data for research and the students get a chance to practice problems by doing many examples. The discussion interface integration is great too.
        • The content videos are okay. One of the presenters gets my attention while the other two are just so/so. There are some places where they check for understanding, but there are only a couple of questions and nothing pointing me back to previous content or helping to remediate my understanding. I think that the only way to improve my understanding is to get the optional text or have study sessions with others who are taking the course. I’m really not even sure that the videos help at all. It would be better to have a large bank of questions that would allow for more practice and feedback.
        • Took the first quiz and got an 80%. Felt like several questions weren’t correct. No immediate feedback, and only 1 attempt allowed. Definitely a losing proposition for me. Even if I get a certificate, I’d rather learn more by receiving direct feedback. The way this course is starting is making feel like it’s holding on to too many concepts of higher ed (high stakes assessment, no immediate feedback, etc.) that drive many away from pursuing a higher degree. Update: allowed to take the quiz a second time b/c of confusion. Without immediate feedback on what I’m missing, it’s not really that helpful. Raised grade to 83%.
