Reflection on Gagne

It’s getting late in the week, but at least this didn’t get moved to next week. Here are my thoughts on Clark’s blog on Gagne.

Before I get started with quotes and reflections, I have to say that this was one of the theorists that I studied during my master’s. This theory never resonated with me because while prerequisite knowledge can be important, I have seen many cases in which prerequisite knowledge can be a barrier to critical thinking and problem solving. I feel like the theory blows up based upon this factor.

Quote:

Gagne’s theory has five categories of learning:
1. Intellectual Skills: Demonstrated by classifying things and problem solving
2. Cognitive strategies: Demonstrated by their use and appropriate application
3. Verbal information: Demonstrated by stating the information accurately
4. Motor skills: Demonstrated by physical performance

5. Attitudes: Demonstrated by preferring options”
Reflection: Reading this list I can’t say that I have any criticisms or see gaping holes.

Quote: This instructional process was to be the recipe for good instructional design. You were expected to move through them, step by step.

1. Gaining attention: Get the learner into an expectant state
2. Stating the objective: Get the learner to understand what they will be able to do as a result of the instruction
3. Stimulating recall of prior learning: Get the learner to appreciate that they posses existing relevant knowledge
4. Presenting the stimulus: Expose the learner to the content
5. Providing learning guidance: Get the learner to understand the content
6. Eliciting performance: Get the learner to demonstrate what they have learned
7. Providing feedback: Inform the learner about their performance
8. Assessing performance: Reinforce the learning
9. Enhancing retention and transfer to other contexts: Get the learner to indulge in varied practice and to generalise the new capability

Reflection: I have used this process, but it is a rather dry and dull methodology. Not sure why it has to be so structured and nine steps seems like such a large and cumbersome approach. I would need to have the steps pinned to the wall just to be reminded.

Quote: ‘Gaining attention’ is often reduced to clichd ice breakers or overlong animation in e-learning and rarely a truly engaging interactive event.”
Reflection: These are Clark’s words, not mine. Definitely something to consider when designing these activities. More than the approach, we need to consider the purpose of the approach.

Quote: In ‘Stating the objective’ the learner is often presented with a dull list of objectives (At the end of this course you will…). This works against the attention and arousal, necessary for learning. There is a strong argument for emotional engagement at the start of a learning experience and not a dull list of objectives.
Reflection: I see this approach all over the content that we have in our program. There are definitely other ways to accomplish objective statements without the blandness that is present. But this takes time, energy, and effort. Most of these are needed to accomplish the whole scope of our jobs. Templates would be nice here.

Quote: Stimulating recall of prior learning is fine but not if the content is truly new to the learner who has no real past experience to draw on and ‘Presenting the stimulus’ betrays behaviourist tendencies.
Reflection: Completely agree with Clark here. There is too much behaviorism present in this theory. It’s great if you have limited time and resources and have low-level skills to train for. But for real learning, this cannot be the approach we use.

Quote: Providing learning guidance’, ‘Eliciting performance’, ‘Providing feedback’ and ‘Assessing performance’ are all sound strategies, as is ‘Enhancing retention and transfer to other contexts’. In practice, much of this is reduced to exposition.
Reflection: This is a checklist that many go through that accomplishes basic work. It represents the least common denominator or Instructional Design.

Quote: Learning and instructional designers often use Gagne’s nine steps and there is much to commend if it is seen as a checklist. However, it can be argued that his instructional ladder leads to predictable and over-structured learning experiences, a straightjacket that strips away any sense of build and wonder. It is also inappropriate for all learning strategies, as he claimed. Scenario-based learning, many types of simulation, games pedagogies and sophisticated adaptive learning are just a few techniques that do not fit readily into this step-by-step recipe.
Reflection: That paints a picture that is hard to shed. I think that we can template different approaches which will work much better than the Gagne approach. We can always use these types of strategies for basic concepts, but for those that involve any type of critical thinking, problems solving, or lateral thinking, we need to go elsewhere.

Quote: Gagne has influenced much of what has appeared as self-paced e-learning over the last 30 years. This has served designers well for simple self-paced e-learning, but the step-by-step approach is now seen as inappropriate for alternative informal learning, especially informal learning and more advanced pedagogies. Some see this approach as producing formulaic, often uninspiring and over-long courses.
Reflection: This pretty much sums it up.

Reflection on Mager

This will make me caught up. Here my reflections on Clark’s blog on Mager.

Quote: “…start with the end point and work backwards.”
Reflection: I was introduced to this notion as a middle school math teacher & find that this is a great way to go.

Quote: “…more rigorous and precise approach to the design of learning experiences based on competences and assessment that relate to defined learning or performance objectives.
Reflection: There is something about this approach which makes me think of teaching to the test. I think that working backwards is important because you are always thinking about what your objective is for your students. Just be careful not to get so caught up in them accomplishing the goal that you forget it is still up to them to do the work to reach the goal.

Quote: A good learning objective has to have three primary components of an objective:

1. Conditions. An objective always states the important conditions (if any) under which the performance is to occur. This could include tools, assistance or assumptions.
2. Performance. An objective always says what a learner is specifically expected to be able to do and may also describe the product or the result of the doing.
3. Criterion. Wherever possible, an objective describes the criterion of acceptable performance by describing how well the learner must perform in order to be considered acceptable.

Reflection: This approach still seems a bit to controlling. What if students find other tools to obtain the objective?

Quote: Criterion Referenced Instruction (CRI) was based on five principles:

1. Competences – Instructional objectives derived from job performance should reflect the competencies (knowledge and skills) that need to be learned.
2. Scope – Learners study and practice only those skills not yet mastered to the level required by the objectives.
3. Practice – Learners must practice each skill and get feedback about the quality of their performance.
4. Reinforcement – Learners need repeated practice in key skills that are to be used often or are difficult to learn.

5. Autonomy – Learners have some freedom to choose the order in which to complete modules and progress self-paced based on their mastery of the objectives.
Reflection: Autonomy is important to include alternative paths for learners to excel.

Quote: Performance objectives can be tricky to define and miss some of the subtler aspects of the learning experience.
Reflection: I hear this legitimate criticism from faculty alot.

Quote: over-emphasis on objectives and assessments that turn many learning events into dull and demotivating experiences for learners.
Reflection: To me, this is teaching to the test.

Quote: CRI promoted the idea of self-paced learning using a variety of media.
Reflection: I still think that this is an enhancement for all sorts of learning environments.

Quote: Some have argued that it has led to the dominance of the ADDIE model. Opponents of this model prefer a more complex, iterative or rapid development models.
Reflection: ADDIE has it’s place, but the user must use it in a way that allows for flexibility.

Reflection on Kandel

Really falling behind on these. Need to do two just to get caught up 🙁

Here are my reflections on Clark’s blog on Kandel.

Quote: Learning, for Kandel, is the ability to acquire new ideas from experience and retain them as memories…”
Reflection: Experiential learning is important, but it can quickly degrade over time without reinforcement, right?

Quote: Short term memory storage modifies existing proteins and alters existing synaptic connections. Long-term storage involves gene activation, the creation of new protein and new synaptic connections. Kandel therefore found the link between experience and biology. Learning could now be seen as experience captured as cellular change.
Reflection: This is good stuff. Moving from learning as a thought of being behavioral to being somehow residing at a much deeper level. It makes sense to me that longer-term, deeper memory becomes a part of us.

Quote: We know how deficient short-term memory is because there is no fundamental chemical and physiological change, whereas long-term memory does involve chemical and physiological change.
Reflection: Pretty profound. Definitely an important idea to consider for anyone who is involved in teaching and learning.

Quote: “…we have strong physiological, cellular and molecular evidence for the difference between short and long term memory, we can apply technology to enhancing learning through spaced practice.
Reflection: I think that it’s so important to bring back concepts. It’s one of the things that I’m practicing in the course that I’m currently teaching. Bringing back concepts helps me to demonstrate to my students how important I think that retaining knowledge is.

Quote: “…recording all lectures for repeated access to the content by students is just one of many changes one could implement in education.
Reflection: This is a practice that we are constantly reinforcing in the program.

Quote: Improving attention, feedback and reinforcement to improve the move from short to long term memory by avoiding cognitive overload,  better elaboration and deeper processing is surely what technology promises to deliver.
Reflection: Great points in how e-learning can help enhance any teaching/learning environment.

Because of Labor Day being at the beginning of this week. I felt one day behind all week. At least I was able to hit this at the end of the day on Friday. Here is Clark’s blog on Tulving.

Quote: Endel Tulving, in 1972, made an important distinction in our long-term memory between episodic memory (remembered experiences and events in time and space) and semantic memory (facts, ideas, concepts, rules independent of time and space). This was largely based on an analysis of internal memory states, and the experimental testing of memories, an anathema to pure behaviourists.”
Reflection: Down with the behaviorists and yes to what is real and true! I’ve experienced memory based upon experience. It’s a cool phenomenon when experience triggers memory, especially for formal assessments. It may be the melding of the two that creates a stronger long-term memory.

Quote: Semantic memories, stored categorically, are quicker to recall than episodic memories that are stored temporally.
Reflection: This speaks to my last reflection above that talks about linking types of memories. I think that those who learn to do this are the most productive.

Quote: “…memory failure, not so much in terms of memory decay, as failure in retrieval.
Reflection: Imagine how incredible our brains are in that they retain so much that it’s difficult to find things, not that they’re lost.

Quote: “…context and physical environment do improve memory, encouraging the view that learning should take place in the context in which it is likely to be used.
Reflection: That we learn out of context speaks to how incredible our brains really are. Without context, we create our own context. I call this pure educational context. In other words, we learned that in school, but we don’t know why. We mostly forget how to process those things since they aren’t relevant for us.

Quote: “…the organisation of learning is important in terms of relating new learning to previous knowledge, emotional and context.
Reflection: This what I do with my courses. We attempt to organize for maximum effectiveness and efficiency.

Quote: Media mix is one area of interest where one tries to match the appropriate media to the most appropriate type of memory…
Reflection: Definitely an important equation to solve. Having the right team around this concept is important in getting the correct answers for students.
