Reflection for 01/12/15 to 01/16/15

It’s a new semester, and the first day was a bit busy. I spent about 3/4 of my day on mps. I’m not sure if this is because of the culture which has been created before my taking over the support position or because it is mps. Nothing major, but it makes for more craziness than is necessary.

I went late into the evening working on things which mostly turned out to be minor. I ended up working with Rosalie on BB Collaborate and am pleased that the tool is working well for her. I worked at home this am and am keeping up with emails and requests well. I sent out another announcement to the 230 pilot class about the live session.

Tuesday and Wednesday I worked from home in the AM. It is nice to have the flexibility to do this especially since I find myself working at odd hours like Monday evening to accomplish my tasks.

I was able to see the presentation on Tuesday by Andrew Sears. He is a potential dean candidate for the College of IST. I look forward to see the 2nd candidate and seeing how we will move forward at the college.

On Wednesday, we met with Steve Haynes again about IST 140. We are going in a good direction and at an adequate pace to get the course ready for Summer ’15.

On Thursday, we met with Joe Oakes. It was a good conversation. I hope that he can deliver on materials so that we can run his 402 in Summer ’15.

Tonight is the first live session for my IST 230 course for Spring ’15. I review the material and am ready for the meeting.

The meeting went well albeit there were only 2 students present. When I checked the course announcement, the url to the room was missing. That may have been the issue. I went through the course today and replied to the introduction messages. I also noticed that 15 of the 20 students have purchased the text. Hopefully, all is cleaned up by the weekend.

Fred Fonseca held an online faculty luncheon (minus the lunch). Anna Divinsky talked about MOOCs. It was a robust session, but I’m getting the feeling that instructors are not as interested in MOOCs right now. They are alot of work without much return for the faculty.

It was a busy week, and I’m ready for some R&R. Disney is only a week away, so I’m really excited!

Reflection for October 20 to October 24

Despite my best intentions, I’m here on a Friday afternoon writing my reflection for the week. It has been a busy but good week.

I went to 2 DMT related meetings. The first was on Monday here at the IST Building. We talked alot about Quality Matters and how it applies to online courses. It is something that we hope we can build into our courses. The second was the sub committee on video. It was a good discussion drilling down into types of videos and why we use them.

On Tuesday, I went to a Penn State Forum event. I saw Bernie Kerik speak. He was an impressive and serious speaker who talked about the problems that we have with our prison systems. Mostly he was pointing fingers at our prosecutors and federal representatives. I was alarmed to know that if we keep at our current pace that 75% of black males will be in the penal system. Bernie also related stories about people who faced felony who definitely could have been rehabilitate other ways. At the end of the session, it made me wonder why we feel so helpless about these types of issues. We as a society are responsible but feel powerless to change things.

I spent a ton of time this week working on setting up courses for Spring 2015. I’m hoping that jumping on these items will open my time to work on the 402 Big Data course development and cms pilots. Hopefully by next week, I’ll be done with all of these.

Speaking of 402 Big Data, this has been a difficult project. We have not had the type of instructor help and timeliness that I had hoped for. Now that things are coming up from the IT perspective, the instructor is ready to bail. I’m hoping that this turns around soon so that we can help our students have the best experience possible in the course. We have several meetings planned with both Bill and IT to help clear things up.

Today, we had another IST Online Community Lunch. It went well. We talked about Canvas and MOOCs. I’m looking forward to the next one on November 7.

Reflection 05/05/14 to 05/09/14

Started the week watching Micah at home for Dee while she did some interpreting work. It’s good to spend time with him and for her to get a chance to get back into the working world.

Had our end-of-semester lunch at Chili’s. Nice job by Kent to print off lions for students. It is difficult to let this crew of students head off into the world, but they will make a positive impression wherever they go.

Spent time with Nick G on IST 220 revision Monday-Wednesday. It was great to meet with faculty for Summer ’14 to prep.

I met with Brian C (EA 872 & 875)& Shawn C (EA 871 & 873) about BB Collaborate and talked about how to sign up for room for the future.

Meeting day on Thursday.

I had a PSOCC – DMT on Friday 5/9 (12-1:30). It was good to hear more about the Blackboard Pilot. Jeff Swain talked about a misunderstanding about Blackboard Collaborate v. Blackboard Collaboration We’ll see how this rolls out and how well it is received by faculty & students. Sounds like I’ll be a part of the pilot for Fall ’14. There was an interesting discussion about students assuming that online courses were meant to have collaboration on individual assessments. I also found out about a MOC through Liberal Arts that will have both an ANGEL part (MOC) & Coursera part (MOOC). The cost is $999 v. $2400.

Met with Louise Sharrar from WCLD about the BB Collaborate Pilot. It is nice to be working with members from the old team on this venture.

The weather was quite variable this week; cool in the beginning and warm by Friday. I’ve been running to prep for the Black Moshannon 5K. Last year, I ran it in 7:31/mile or 23:17. I was pleasantly surprised by my time since I hadn’t run anything under an 8 min/mile pace in my training runs. I plan to run M, W, F for 3 miles per run until 5/16 which is next Friday. For the week leading up to the run, I plan to run intervals for 2 miles, M-Th. That really worked last year. I’m also hoping to drop a few pounds. It shouldn’t be too difficult to beat my time since I ran on a full stomach (eggs and bacon). I also wasn’t anticipating the last hill and final stretch downhill at the end. This time, I’ll be able to pace myself and make the final push with knowledge.

I have had correspondence about the baseball team that I’m playing on. We start 5/28 and end 8/27. It will be a great way to start and finish up the summer. I bought a hitting training aid to prep myself. I’ve also been working with all three of my sons on baseball.

Learning Design Community Meeting 07/26/13

Invigorated by my time at Learning Design Summer Camp, so I got myself to July 2013 Community Meeting. Angela Dick & Megan Kohler shared their experiences on how the MOOC’s are going.

Since Angela was working on the art mooc & Megan is working on the Epidemics MOOC. I found myself comparing & contrasting both of their experiences.

Here are some similarities:

  • Target audiences in the MOOC’s are varied and always moving. This can be one of the issues with preparing for the experience. It is interesting to know that seasoned artists would be interested in an intro to art course. Sounds like since the Epidemics course is open & free that many from the medical education community are going to use the course as an opportunity to give their students a chance to apply their knowledge and skills. I would imagine that this will not be the only type of learner. It’s refreshing to see those from different walks of life get an opportunity to share a learning experience. I’ll be interested to hear more about the interaction.
  • Short timeline for preparation
  • Issues with the backend of Coursera

Here are some differences:

  • Design team constitution. Art had 2 id’s, 2 videographers, an instructor, and a ta while Epidemics has 8 faculty, 3 graphic designers, an id, and a production crew
  • Costs. It sounded like Art didn’t have as much of a budget while the Epidemics course is way over their allotted 50 K budget (actual spending is several millions.

I have some other thoughts that resonated with me:

  • As Megan talked about her experience of designing without objectives and goals that you have to think differently about MOOC’s because of the time for development and other factors. I was reminded of the ELI Annual Meeting that Cassandra Horrii & Leslie Maxfield talking about having to think about certain factors when creating MOOC’s in their session Roadmap to Launching a MOOC. Here is what Cassandra & Leslie presented along with some of my thoughts: https://sites.psu.edu/rep129blog/2013/02/07/eli-meeting-day-3/
  • Angela was surprised at how serious the students in the Arts course were despite it being a free an open experience.
  • The notion of cost came up a few times. I’m not sure we can currently know the financial impact of MOOC’s. I’m sure that much of the benefit lies in the future. But are the initial, up-front costs too much to overcome? This is a question that will be answered soon, I’m sure.
