Wrap Up

A final point to emphasize is that no perfect solution exists for team assignments, creating teams and assessing teams.  It all will vary based on what you as the instructor want to accomplish, the resources at your disposal, and the pacing of your course.  Understanding the teaming process will certainly help you intervene and facilitate to help teams reach and appropriate resolution.  Using things like a team contract helps members take ownership of their team.  What instructors typically don’t want to have happen is to be viewed as the “team leader” or final voice for every team. You, as the instructor, might need to facilitate teams working through problems at certain times. But you want to try to avoid setting up a situation where a team in conflict constantly comes to you for resolution vs. working through the conflict with a bit of your assistance.
