Replacing Adobe Freehand in Art Courses

Our art professor, Fred Haag, has used Adobe Freehand on our campus computers for initial sketching/project design for his students. The campus doesn’t have that on its lab computers anymore, so we’re looking for a replacement – that isn’t as complicated as Illustrator…

There are lots that work great on iPads – Adobe Sketch for example is awesome – easy to use and interfaces with Behance (both free) – a cloud-based portfolio/social networking option that would be perfect (app too) – Students can use a stylus to sketch freehand or draw on top of images that can then be made transparent.

Here is an example of a Behance portfolio that I did really quickly using Adobe Sketch and uploaded directly from the app – http://bit.ly/1swLQlO

Our struggle is that not all students have iPads so we need a PC option.

I’m testing InsightPoint and RealDraw

UPDATE: Fred came over to check it out and Adobe Sketch wouldn’t work on a non-Mac… so he found Sketchbook Express by Autodesk – another freebie and that seems to do the kinds of things he wants students to do in their initial artwork creation process. So as long as they have a device, they can work on either option – and for those without a device, they have the PCS – Illustrator – or we’ll look into getting InsightPoint installed if possible.
