Critical Literacy Skills

In an article dated 12/12/16 from The Chronicle entitled “How Can Students Be Taught to Detect Fake News and Dubious Claims?”, author Shannon Najmabadi makes the case for faculty to incorporate more information literacy into their coursework and not simply relegate the responsibility to already overworked library staff. This certainly is a challenge for many reasons: 1) faculty are pressed for time to cover their own content; 2) they may not feel adequately prepared to address this skill set; and 3)they may believe that it is not their responsibility.

I think there is room for a conversation about how to possibly embed information literacy into all disciplinary teaching approaches that could enrich all of us in this post 2016 presidential election era.  With many people still reeling from the election results, educators can play a key role in fashioning a future with a better equipped citizenry. Will we take up the challenge?
