Faculty Learning Communities for 2018-2019

Two groups of faculty are gathering for the 2018-19 academic year to explore the following topics of interest:

  1. Strategizing for Publication:  From Innovation to Dissemination – led by Dr. Jennifer Nesbitt, Associate Professor English, this faculty professional development group is geared not only towards helping participants move from the idea stage to completed writing projects, but also toward incorporating the goal of dissemination into the idea phase of all aspects of faculty development (teaching and service in addition to research).   We will use Writing your Journal Article in 12 Weeks (Belcher, 2009) as our key text, but we will also use online (Tomorrow’s ProfessorProfHacker blog) and university (other faculty, library, etc.) resources to cultivate a culture of research.
  2. Decoding your Discipline: Identifying and Addressing Disciplinary Learning Bottlenecks – This group, led by Dr. Judith Owen, Lecturer in Biology,  will explore the Decoding the Disciplines Framework  http://decodingthedisciplines.org/ , “a process for increasing student learning by narrowing the gap between expert and novice thinking. Beginning with the identification of bottlenecks to learning in particular disciplines, it seeks to make explicit the tacit knowledge of experts and to help students master the mental actions they need for success in particular courses.”

Each group has submitted a proposal to TLT’s new program, Faculty Learning Communities, headed by Dr. Stephanie Edel-Malizia of TLT’s instructional design team. If selected, the groups will receive funds to support the work of the group including books or other resources as needed.
