Baby, baby, baby, ohhh

*This has absolutely nothing to do with Justin Bieber, I Just thought the title was catchy.*

In college we often here girls talk about “baby fever.” Baby fever is the phenomena that is sweeping young woman all over the country. It refers to the feelings you get when you see other people around you having babies. But is baby fever a real thing? Or is it just our immediate thought when we see tons of cute babies around?

As I would consider myself someone with baby fever, I decided to look into it a little more. Baby fever isn’t a joke. It’s an actual thing that affects a ton of people, both men and women. Researchers at Kansas State University completed a study in which they asked men and women to rank their desires. Although certain factors can affect it, the majority of men and women ranked having a baby higher then other most other desires. For women it ranked above sex and for men it ranked right below.

There seems to be multiple factors that people consider when having a baby, but overall the desire is there for everyone- and baby fever is in fact very real.

P.I.E.D.

For most young guys erectile dysfunction is not something they worry about. At the same time for most young guys porn is, simply put, a part of life. It’s becoming more and more common for these two things to overlap and cause a huge problem for any guy looking to get laid.

Obviously erectile dysfunction is huge problem for a lot of men, usually over the age of 40, and there are many pills out there to help solve the problem. There’s also the suggestion of living a healthier lifestyle. But what about young guys? Guys between the ages of 15 and 25 have never been thought to deal with erectile dysfunction, but it’s becoming a more prominent in today’s society. The other thing that is becoming more prominent (and more widely accepted and accessible) is porn. In this case causation is definitely to blame. Porn induced erectile dysfunction is becoming a problem for young guys who watch a lot of porn. The name, Porn induced erectile dysfunction, is sort of an oxymoron. No one thinks of porn as something that would cause erectile dysfunction, in fact, most people assume the opposite. That being said research shows that too much porn can have adverse affects for young men.

Porn induced erectile dysfunction develops when too much porn is being watched. Researchers here at Penn State have looked into the problem, along with other outside studies. There isn’t a ton of conclusive research, so most of what we do know has been investigated very little. The erectile dysfunction experienced during real intercourse is basically due to some developmental confusion in the brain. When a male watches too much porn, his brain can not interpret one type of sexual stimulation from another. What begins to happen is the brain begins to interpret what is watched in the porn, into what is happening in reality. When a male goes to have intercourse with someone the brain is no longer sexual aroused by something so simple. Additionally, for males who are in relationships that view porn, their brains are no longer used to being with one woman, so they have problems being with one person because their brain believes they are with many woman because of the varying people pictured in pornographic video.

Not to fear, this problem is curable and not long lasting. Eventually your brain will adapt to everything and your erections will return to normal, but if you want the problem to go away because you’re in a relationship many researchers suggest a quick cure with some additional benefits. They say to stop watching porn for 30 days and you will see your sex life drastically improve (i.e. longer erections, more stimulation, etc.).

Maybe your born with it, maybe it’s adaptation?

One of the first things you learn as a human development major is that we are born with the ability to do or imitate many things. We seem rather helpless as babies, well because in fact, we are. Just because we are, in all reality, helpless doesn’t mean we haven’t developed things to make us seem as though we aren’t. We, as humans, are born with five natural resources, that are used to help us stay alive. One of those five reflexes that proves that babies have adapted things to keep themselves alive once they realize are helpless, is the moro reflex.

Probably the most important of our first five reflexes, the moro reflex is one that allows us to attempt to stop something tragic. The moro reflex, is our reflex to stop us from falling. Now you may be questioning how as an infant (who cant walk) we will be falling, but it actually occurs when an outside force may be to blame. In infants the moro reflex is activated when we feel as though we are being dropped. Whether we would be falling off a changing table or being dropped by our caregiver, the moro reflex works the same. When the moro reflex is triggered we reach out our arms and legs looking for something to hold onto. This is the natural reaction to stop ourselves from falling, even into adulthood.

So why are we born with this reflex? Not much research has been put into how we acquire this reflex in utero, but the research as to why is pretty self explanatory. Studying infants is usually difficult, so researchers study what they can. We’ve adapted to protect ourselves-the first five reflexes we have are for protection. The moro reflex is something so important that a baby is naturally born with it. If infants didn’t have the moro reflex they couldn’t even attempt to catch themselves during a fall. Although unlikely the moro reflex would actually result in a baby catching themselves (or even having to actually be used), it’s the adaptation that matters. We as humans know to protect ourselves. The flight or fight response, reacting to painful stimuli and the moro reflex show that we are born knowing that if we want to protect ourselves, we have to do something about it.

my relationship with science is love/hate.

Hi everyone! My name is Rebecca and I am a sophomore here at State. I’m majoring in Human development and family studies and am pursuing a minor in Child maltreatment and advocacy. My priorities for the future are to start a family, get my masters of social work, and work for child protective services (or be a stay at home mom).

A little more about me personally…I was born and raised in New Jersey in a relatively small town called Burlington (if you look at new jersey on a map were right in the bend on the left side). It’s just me and my mom, along with our dog, Rosie.

Additionally, my boyfriend is a Marine and that plays a huge part in my life. He’s currently deployed and will be home in February.

Here’s a super good song about the Marine Corps….Semper Fi

If you couldn’t tell by my major or future goals, I’m not a math or science person at all. I hate math with everything inside me, but I can make exceptions for science. It’s a love/hate relationship. I hate biology and chemistry, but love anatomy and physiology. Maybe that’s because of the teachers I had or maybe it was just the material covered.

I’m taking this class because I need a gen ed in science for my major and this was the only class that intrigued me in the least. I thought I’d just be taking this class for a grade, but after the first classes I’m honestly interested in what were going to cover.
