What Our Students Say

Studying abroad in Brno was more than I could have ever asked for. I didn’t really know what to expect going in but I left with some of the most valuable lessons and experiences of my life. It really begins with opening your mind and wanting to do as much as you possibly can to embrace the culture.

Ben Matthews

Finance Major | Brno, Czech Republic: Doing business in Central Europe, Summer 2022

My experience studying abroad was above and beyond anything I could have imagined. In just a few short weeks, I got to visit three countries, meet eleven of my fellow Penn Staters, and experience so many different cultures! My study abroad experience is still something I talk about to this day because I enjoyed it and learned so much.

Jahanvi Gupta

Accounting (MAcc) Major | Pforzheim University Business Program, Summer 2018

While studying abroad, I learned how international business occurs in not only Italy, but the four other countries I was able to visit. I witnessed the implications involved in family owned businesses and how they operate globally, along with the unique challenges associated in these international businesses. Studying abroad helped me to develop the capacity to think globally in the context of business planning and decision making.

Melanie Cordova

Agribusiness Management Major| Florence Summer, 2018

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question that’s not listed? Send us an email at smeal-international@psu.edu.

I'm just starting to explore study abroad. What are my next steps?
Great – welcome to the start of this great adventure! If you haven’t yet visited our website, that’s a good place to start. You can find information on the timing of study abroad, start looking at what programs are available to apply for, consider the International Business minor, apply for Smeal study abroad scholarships and get in touch with Smeal study abroad alumni.

Please let your academic adviser (BA or DUS) know that you are considering study abroad as soon as possible. They will help you make sure to stay on track academically for this experience. Particularly for semester study abroad, it is very important to plan ahead. Smeal students cannot take major courses abroad and typically make progress by taking general education (Interdomain, GA, GH, GS) and elective credits.

It’s never too early to schedule an appointment with a Smeal International Programs adviser. We can help you get started by exploring program choices, and talking about when to go and what classes to take.

What if I'm in DUS?
We’re happy to meet with DUS students, whether you’re absolutely sure of your plans to declare a Smeal major or whether you’re still exploring possible majors at Penn State.

We can give you an overview of what study abroad options would look like for you as a Smeal student, and how to work with your DUS Adviser on saving credits for study abroad.

Will study abroad courses count toward my major?
Smeal students must take Smeal major courses at Penn State. Courses taken abroad may count for gen eds, electives, language, or in some cases, a Minor, such as the International Business Minor. Talk to a Smeal International Programs Adviser to learn how courses abroad may satisfy degree requirements.
How do I earn the International Business Minor?
Smeal business students may choose to pursue the International Business (IB) Minor. For those interested in studying abroad, the Global Immersion Track offers the chance to expeirence and study business, langauge, and culturel for 6 or more weeks through an approved education abroad program.

Others may choose the Global Business Track and focus on a deeper understanding of international business.

Either way, students develop a greater understanding and appreciation for global business and culture that prepares them for a career beyond traditional boundaries.

Please make an appointment with a Smeal International Programs Adviser to complete your IB Minor Academic Plan and delcare the Minor.

Summer Study Abroad

(Photo: Olivia Ritchey, DIS: Copenhagen | Summer 2021)

Summer programs are a popular choice for students after their first or second year at Penn State. Summer program length can vary, but it is typical to find programs that are 6 weeks, 6 credits. Students take classes in a variety of disciplines ranging from business, language, culture and more.

Junior year summer is often reserved for internships, although Penn State does offer some 3-week, 3-credit Maymester study abroad programs that can often fit in before the start of an internship. However, some students will choose longer summer study abroad programs even as juniors!

International internships can be a good option for students after the first or second year when domestic internships can be harder to come across.

See our Choosing a Program page for summer programs!

Semester Study Abroad

(Photo: Diego Lavegas, IES: Milan | Fall 2022)

The most popular time for study abroad in Smeal is spring semester of junior year. Students are eligible to go abroad for a full semester after they officially enter their major (typically at the end of spring of sophomore year). Fall semester of junior or senior year is also possible.

International internships are also available for many semester programs. These are part-time experiences, and while Smeal does not accept work experience as academic credit, part-time internships provide an immersive cultural opportunity and allow you to learn about business practices in another country. Set yourself apart and add international work experience to your resume!

See our Choosing a Program page for semester programs!
