You would think that there would be an organization already out there that would specifically be focused on empowering and assisting college students who have schizophrenia, but there is not. This is very much needed because schizophrenic breaks most often occur during the same age range as the typical college student. With that, one out of ten people who have schizophrenia take their own life through suicide. Another four out of that ten attempt suicide at least once. Those numbers go up while adding the stress of pursuing a college education. The need for a non-profit focusing on students with schizophrenia is urgent; therefore, the team is working diligently towards launching Students With Schizophrenia in the spring of 2017 and is now accepting internship applications and volunteer signups!
Schizophrenia and other less talked about mental illnesses such as borderline personality disorder are shied away from even in the mental health community because it makes people feel uncomfortable. People though are most often scared of what they do not understand. Students with schizophrenia need to know that it is “okay” to have schizophrenia and that there is the support and resources out there to help them stay in college and accomplish their dreams. Even though it makes some people feel uncomfortable to talk about mental health, so many students with schizophrenia are being robbed of their ability to live their lives to their full potential and to live a life without fear. We need to be there for them. 1.1% of the world population over the age of eighteen (51 million people) have some sort of form of schizophrenia. Get involved by expressing your interest to donate, apply for an internship, and/or signup to volunteer for Students With Schizophrenia. The time to act is now.
