Katie’s Experience in Jordan

Katie studied in Jordan on the CIEE: Amman, Arabic Language program in the Summer of 2015.

If you could give only one reason, why would you suggest other students study abroad?

I would suggest studying abroad because it is a life-changing experience overall; by taking you outside of your comfort zone, connecting with people from all walks of life, giving you an academic advantage and personal growth toward becoming a global citizen.

What specific factors influenced your decision to go abroad?

I was influenced to go abroad just by my nature – I have always aspired to travel abroad.
Influences to study abroad in the middle east include progressing in the language and to see what the region/culture was really like.

What concerns/fears did you have about studying abroad, and how
did you overcome them?

I did have concern for my safety going to the Middle East, but that soon dissipated as soon as I got there throughout the entire time. The people were so welcoming and the culture is so beautiful. It is NOTHING like what I have heard/seen own the news.

What was it about your program specifically that fit your personal goals over other programs?

Arabic language is a critical need language and is highly sought in the career spectrum. I definitely wanted a competitive advantage in my future job searches and want to bring diversity to any career I choose. My major is International Business with a minor in Arabic, so I felt it was completely related.

What experiences did you have while studying abroad that you feel you could not have had if you had stayed at Penn State?

If you think college is freedom and living life to the fullest, you NEED to study abroad! The non-traditional countries are the most interesting too, in my opinion. It truly causes personal and professional growth in many areas of your life. Learning the language, connecting in the culture and challenging yourself are the perfect was to improve yourself and alter your perspective as an educated person.
