Dramatic Weight Loss

Sooo everyone knows that people will go to extremes for their art but there is a line that maybe shouldn’t be crossed. Anne Hathaway, for her new movie Les Miserables, admitted that she did not eat for 13 days in order to prepare for filming. Let me repeat that: THIS GIRL DID NOT EAT FOR THIRTEEN WHOLE DAYS FOR A MOVIE ROLE. Now I understand that Anne Hathaway’s character in the movie is poor and malnourished but to  starve yourself for such a long time is such an extreme. Hathaway dropped a total of fifteen pounds and for someone who was already skinny that means that she has entered the realm of dangerously underweight.

The issue of body image can be largely attributed to the media. Everyday young girls are assaulted by images and ideas surrounding the “perfect woman”. If someone doesn’t fit this standard, they’re made to feel inferior.  Unfortunately, it seems that normal people are not the only ones who get caught up in the complex of body image issues. Evidently, Anne Hathaway struggles with fitting in to the mold perpetuated by the world that she is so a part of.

Isn’t there a problem with this extreme dieting that so many actresses fall into? Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis both lost an obscene amount of weight in order to look the parts of ballerinas and they also got praised for it. In all of her interviews Anne has been seen as such a dedicated actress for her sacrifices for the role. This shows the dysfunctional nature of a society that praises women for extremely altering their bodies for the entertainment of others.

Here are my strongest Passion posts:

Bald for Bieber

Love is Louder than the Pressure to be Perfect

And my strongest RCL posts:

Do the Right Thing

Gangnam Style

For the Passion posts that I chose I believe that these are the most important for a very specific reason. This reason has to do with the overlying themes brought up in the posts.  One post deals with the idolization of celebrities and the other is the issue of body image in not only celebrities but normal people as well. In both posts I tried to go deeper than just summarizing the big story in celebrity news for that week. The Bald for Bieber post not only placed the blame of extreme idolization of celebrities on parents but our society as a whole. My Lady Gaga post took the issue of body image and focued it on someone who you may not have thought struggled with issues such as Bulimia and Anorexia. I wanted to provide a forum for discussion on serious topics that re not always at the forefronts of our minds. From the content of the posts and also the comments left by others I think that I can safely say that the posts did what they were supposed to do.

For my RCL posts I think  I took public events (Do the Right Thing event, Gangnam style phenomenon) and posed the necessary questions needed to analyze these things in order to provide relevant and stimulating discussion. For the Do the Right Thing post I expressed my views on the movie and subsequent Q&A session and I raised topics that may have been sensitive in nature but necessary. I did the same thing for my Gangnam Style post. What I talked about was met with dissention from a few people and provided an opportunity for people not only in our class but ariund the country to look at their actions concerning the video and maybe come to a realization that it was not all innocent.

Reflection of Myself

As my first semester of college comes to a close I have realized that I have accomplished so many “firsts” and have grown closer into becoming an independent individual. RCL class in particular has presented me with many challenges concerning what I want to do with my life, how I approach the unknown, and how I should set goals for the future. As a writer I have worked to go more in depth when it comes to our various assignments. This is something that I have previously struggled with and will continue to work on in the next semester of this class. One thing I’m really proud of in my first year is how I branched out and made friends and did things that I didn’t normally do. Before I came to college I didn’t really party and I was definitely more quiet. Now I do all these things and if it weren’t for me having a new attitude I wouldn’t have met people this year that I know will be in my life forever. In the next semester I would like to earn an A in RCL, work to the best of my ability concerning speeches and papers and also get over my anxiety about public speaking. I would also like to get more involved with clubs and what not so I can get even more connected to my school.
