Having a routine before and after you apply your makeup is definitely key. By following these four simple steps, you will feel more organized and your skin will definitely want to thank you.
- Cleanse. By washing your face, you’re removing oil and dirt that you don’t want to leave lying on your skin, especially if you’re applying makeup on top of that. Even if you washed your face earlier, excess dirt and oil can surface on your skin later on. Before you apply your makeup, always make sure your face is clean, and I would suggest using a face wash that matches your skin type. For example, my skin is on the dry side and is sensitive, so I use Cetaphil. This face wash cleanses, softens and soothes my skin. If your skin type is oily, I would recommend this as well. It’s for all skin types and gets the job done. Also, this product is very cheap. It’s only $2.97 at Target.
- Moisturize. Applying lotion to your skin is always an essential, especially to your face before applying your makeup. I would suggest investing in a light moisturizer that will block the sun’s harmful rays and won’t be too heavy for your face. Having a lighter layer of lotion on will prevent blocking your pores, which leads to acne. Moisturizing your face will prevent dryness, peeling, and you’ll build a protective layer of moisture that will last all day. I use Clean & Clear Dual Action Moisturizer. This lotion is lighter and hydrates your skin, while also preventing pimples. This product is also cheap. It’s $4.74 at Target.
- Apply Primer. Primer is a base for foundation. This step prepares and smoothens your face before you apply makeup. It allows your makeup to go on more smoothly and fills in fine lines and wrinkles. Some face primers can even add a nice glow to your skin, some people skip this step, which is fine. However, if you want to improve the way your makeup feels and looks on your face, I would suggest not skipping it. A great primer I use is Primer Perfection by Milani.
- Clean your makeup tools. Your makeup tools, such as beauty blenders and makeup brushes, can build up bacteria. This can happen by moving these tools from your makeup bag to maybe a table or surface that contains bacteria, or just by leaving makeup residue on them from the last time you applied your makeup. The worst part is that these bacteria come into contact with our skin if we skip the step of cleaning our makeup tools. In my opinion, buying brush cleaner is a waste of money. Do you know that the soap you use to clean your dishes is a great substitute for makeup brush cleaners? Yes, dish soap! It cleans your makeup tools just as well as makeup brush cleaners do. I use Dawn, and I receive amazing results every single time; my makeup tools are shiny clean with a simple drop. I would suggest washing your makeup tools each time after you apply your makeup. If not, at least once a week.
By following these four easy steps, you’ll see a change in your skin, and makeup look in no time!
