Get ready to bring out your nunchucks and swords because the new Netflix series “Marvel’s Iron Fist” finally arrived on March 17. “Marvel’s Iron Fist” is the final entry in Marvel’s Defenders series that will be released later this year.
The show stars two alumni from the HBO show “Game of Thrones,” Finn Jones, who plays Danny Rand/Iron Fist, and Jessica Henwick, who plays Colleen Wing. The show also stars “90210” star Jessica Stroup as Joy Meachum and “Guiding Light” star Tom Pelphrey as Ward Meachum.
The season began with Danny Rand returning to New York City in rags after being presumed dead in a plane crash with his parents 15 years ago. Danny attempts to return to his father’s company, Rand Enterprises, to speak to his childhood friends Joy and Ward Meachum, but he is immediately dismissed by them because they thought he was dead and he appears to be homeless.
With the help of Hogarth, a lawyer featured in “Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” Claire Temple, a former nurse featured in all four Netflix Marvel shows, and Colleen Wing, a fellow martial artist and love interest of Danny, he is able to prove his identity.
Throughout the show, Danny must deal with the social, emotional and mental issues he has, returning to New York City after being trained in a monastery for 15 years and coping with the haunting memories of the plane crash. He also must fulfill the responsibilities of being the Iron Fist, which involves his defeating of “The Hand,” a group of evil mystical ninjas heavily involved in crime.
“Marvel’s Iron Fist” stirred up a lot of controversy over casting. Many people believed that the role of Danny Rand should have gone to an Asian actor since the Iron Fist is a master martial artist and the show is embedded in Asian culture. This is an understandable point of view.
However, the original Iron Fist comic book character was a white man. Marvel has been known to change the race and sex of major superheroes like Iron Man and Nick Fury, among many others, so Marvel wasn’t trying appropriate Asian culture or make a statement when Finn Jones was cast as Iron Fist.
The show was also panned by critics for being uninteresting overall. It has much higher ratings from regular viewers. This show is a lot slower paced than its predecessors.
One big mistake made by the writers of the show is that Danny Rand’s origin story is extended for too many episodes and became confusing to the viewers. The origin story could have been covered in one or two episodes.
Despite the slow pace, the final three episodes are much more interesting. The fight scenes in the show are also not as action-packed as they could have been.
Compared to the other shows in Marvel’s Defenders series, “Marvel’s Iron Fist” is by far the worst. However, if you look at this show without comparing it to other Marvel shows, it’s still pretty good. Martial arts fans, Marvel fans and anyone interested in a good story will enjoy this show.
All 13 episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
