Philanthropy Week took place at Penn State Abington for the first time this year as a means to get the campus to become more involved and give back.
On Nov. 27, known as Giving Tuesday around the world, everyone was encouraged to donate to their favorite causes. This is an international movement for charitable
donations to start off the Christmas season. It even has its own hashtag and Facebook promotions so that everyone can get involved.
Penn State Abington, thanks to the leaders of the Philanthropy Week, followed right along with the movement, setting up a booth in the Woodland building, where students could stop by and donate to a cause that helps struggling students, which can be any one of us. They also offered cupcakes to those who came in support.
On the following day, Nov. 28, at an event called Tag Scavenger Hunt, they took it upon themselves to give back to the students in a fun and creative way, using their hashtags and taking selfies throughout campus to complete the hunt. Participants were given prizes at the end.
The Philanthropy Week leaders made this week a time to interact with the campus and encouraged all to do some good, attracting students with fun activities including good food on Thankful Thursday on Nov. 29.
Thankful Thursday, held at Lubert Commons, allowed students to have a plate of food around their peers and write what they are thankful for, bringing Thanksgiving to campus and helping busy students to wind down in a positive, upbeat environment.
Philanthropy Week concluded with a food drive. Boxes all around campus were set up so that students could put food in, which at the end of the day would be collected and donated.
The week encouraged selfless acts and a chance to have the campus community interact more with each other. Penn State Abington is giving back to others and its own students with the help of the Philanthropy Council, who helped run this week without a hitch.
