STEPS FOR VETS 5K: Raising PTSD Awareness One Step at a Time

The Penn State World Campus Psychology Club will be hosting its first virtual 5K on June 26, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. (your local timezone) in honor of PTSD awareness month.

Wherever you are, grab your friends and family, throw on your WCPC PTSD Awareness 5K shirts, lace up your sneakers and run or walk to help raise awareness and help contribute to mental health services for our US veterans!

All proceeds from the event will go to a charity called Give an Hour an organization that provides free and confidential mental health services to U.S. military veterans and their family members.

Be sure to take a photo of yourself the day of the event and upload it to our Snapshots Gallery (details in our F.A.Q. below)! We want to see all of the participants!

Also feel free to share the Snapshots photos along with your own posts to our Facebook Page and to our Twitter– don’t forget to tag #Steps4Vets@psuwcpc.

Can’t make it the day of the event? Do it another day and share your photos anyway!

Can’t walk the whole thing? Do what you can!

Want to buy a shirt to support the cause, but can’t bear the thought of walking/running a 5k? That’s okay too, just be sure to share your photo with us!

F.A.Q.

  • What exactly is this event and how do I participate?
The Steps for Vets 5K is a virtual 5K dedicated to raising awareness for PTSD. On June 26, 2016 at 8:30 AM, wherever you are all you have to do is throw on your WCPC PTSD Awareness shirt and walk/run a 5K. You can do it absolutely anywhere! You can even do it from a treadmill if you want! Feel free (in fact please do- the more the merrier!) to bring your whole family along for the fun! Just be sure to take a photo of yourself/your group and add it to our Snapshots Gallery!
  • How do I register?
Register by clicking on the event on our page and confirm your attendance, it’s that simple!
  • Can I create a team?
Yes! You can either create a group of participants where you live and use our page to organize the details (meetup location etc.), or if you want you can create a team of people around the nation/world. Be sure to post your team information on our Facebook Page so that we can group your photos in the Snapshots gallery for you!  Don’t forget you can use our Bibs to write in your team name or location as well as your name!
  • I am physically unable to do the 5K or I can’t do it on the time/day planned, is there a way for me to still participate?
ABSOLUTELY! If you have physical limitations, just do what you can or nothing at all. Just snap a photo of yourself in the WCPC PTSD Awareness shirt (or print our the Bib available on our Steps for Vets Facebook Page if you missed our shirt sale)  and share!
If you can’t do it at 8:30 AM, do it later in the day and share your photo then!
If you can can’t do it on the 26th, feel free to do it a day or two before or a day or two after and share your photo then!

  • I want to help spread awareness, but I missed the shirt sale; what can I do?
Take a photo of yourself the day of the event with our printable bib and share it to Snapshots and other social media tagging #Steps4Vets
  • If I chose to make a donation instead of buying a shirt or I am unable to wear my shirt the day of the event, what can I do to contribute to the photo campaign?
We have printable bibs available in our Facebook Page Timeline Photos that participants can put on the day of the event and take a photo with in place of their shirts if they want to donate vs. owning an extra shirt or if they cannot wear the shirt the day of the event. Also, if you do purchase a shirt but cannot/do not intend to wear it during the actual 5K but plan to wear the bib instead- please share the photo of you with the bib, but also feel free to take a photo of yourself in your shirt at a time that works for you. Just don’t forget to upload it to snapshots and share to our Facebook and Twitter tagging #Steps4Vets@psuwcpc.
  • Where are the profits from this event going to?
All of the proceeds made from this event will be given directly to a Non-Profit Organization called Give an Hour. They work to provide free mental health services to U.S. military veterans and their families. You can read more about them here.
  • How are you raising funds for the charity?
We have finished the fund raising portion of this event. However, we are still working hard to raise awareness! So please check out our Facebook Page to read about PTSD and please upload your photos on the day of the event to our Snapshots Gallery!
