Advocacy Project? Hmm…

Hello, everyone. I’m planning on sticking with my persuasive essay topic, which is to address how the use of tracking in America’s public schools is seriously damaging the student’s futures. So here is a rough picture of what my advocacy project is going to look like. It’s still in the works so I would really appreciate everyones help.

My project is going to consist of either 2 or 3 Public Service Announcements (PSA’s), which should be between 30 seconds to a minute at the most. They will quickly describe how tracking is not good for the students and what we can do to help stop the use of tracking. I will probably record the script in the media commons and upload it to iMovie. The catchphrase/clincher of the video will be “Rethink Tracking.” My only problem is deciding on how to do the animation/video portion of the PSA so that it is engaging and interesting to the audience. I thought about stop/go animation but I’m pretty sure this would take too much time. Any ideas?

After the message, I will encourage people to help and participate in my endevour to end tracking, and this is where my originial petition idea comes in. I will probably use YouTube to post my videos so there will be a link to the petition in the video. This petition was created by Take Action Organization (the same one that funded the documentary “Waiting For Superman”), and will be sent to state governers in order to convince them that state legislation needs to be a part of imporving the education system. The petition is found here.

The audience will be people highly interested in the state of America’s public school system, for example, families with children in the public school system or educators. But I would like the project to reach people who don’t know a lot about tracking and, therefore, consider it to not be an important issue. I would like to educate people that normally woudn’t be interesting in this topic.

The purpose of the project will be to inform people about the negative effects of tracking and what they could do to help (sign the petition!)

I plan on uploading the PSA’s to YouTube and then I’ll probably e-mail the video to people who would be interested (my family, for example). I’ll also post it on Facebook, because everybody knows that the quickest way to get information out into the world is by using social networks.

So I would love it if people would comment with some ideas about the animation portion of the video. Thanks so much, guys!

  2. I think you should stay away from animation because it might take away from the serious tone of your videos. A good idea might be sending this link to school administrators or teachers from high school. It would a good way for it to catch on.

  3. As someone who loves video media, I’m telling you that stop-go animation is really difficult unless you’ve already mastered it, and even then, is really tedious and time consuming. If you feel comfortable with it, I’d say go for it. It would make your project really cool! If not, and if you don’ feel like you have the time, I’d say scrap that.

Something that I personally love doing in many of my videos is a common sort of “cliche” I suppose. I really enjoy getting little sound bites from news stories and merging them together, so that when you actually play the video, it looks like a Waiting for Superman kind of thing. This also takes time, but much less than Stop-Go animation. But either way, I think you are totally on the right track. This really looks like it’s going to be baller, Kim!

I think your only real challenge is to make sure that people are REALLY engaged in the video and really care about tracking, as it is a topic that not many people typically know or think about. The video is definitely your best bet though. I wish I could help you more on the animation side of things, but I am horrible with stuff like that! Good luck!
