Blog #2: First Week Continued

My first week in Ireland has been exciting and eventful! My classmates and I were able to experience a variety of services provided for individuals with a disability, whether that be mentally, physically, or emotionally.

On Wednesday, May 29th, I had the privilege of attending Trinity’s Sci Fest. Here, ten individuals who were first years with varying intellectual disabilities, got the chance to put together a final project. The theme of these projects were based on what each student was passionate about, and be able to connect that passion with science. It was a pleasure to watch these students light up when explaining their individual projects.

On Thursday, May 30th, we all made our way over to St. Michael’s House. This location serviced older adults with differing disabilities. In this building, individuals took part in socialization, games, crafts, and exercises. This service assisted these individuals in finding group homes as well. I was able to have tea and hang out with a few men and women in the building. It was a very happy and positive atmosphere and was an enjoying experience!

Lastly, on Friday, May 31st, we took the train to Mental Health Ireland. Here we were able to meet the CEO, Martin Rogan, to understand what advocacy they have and the services they offered. Mental Health Ireland had an emphasis on community and volunteers. Martin also conveyed their values on mental health promotion and living a full, meaningful life. It was amazing hearing how passionate he was about mental health!

Overall, this week was a great one! Can’t wait to see what next week will bring. Stay Tuned!
