Day 3 (3/4)

Today we woke up bright and early at 8:00am to go to the city of Pretoria, a short drive from Johannesburg. We learned the history of how Pretoria was first founded by the Dutch settlers who first moved inland. The Voortrekker Monument is dedicated to this movement and the struggle these settlers had with the native people. Afterwards we went to see the house of one of South Africa’s former presidents, Paul Kruger.

The afternoon was spent conducting interviews with local people about whether they listen to Pretoria FM. We all went around some high public traffic areas to speak with the residents. Afterwards it was off to Freedom Park, a site dedicated to the men and women who fought in the struggle for a democratic South Africa.

This night was special, however, because we got invited to eat the home of Penn State parents Dr & Mrs Ogunrombi. Their kindness and hospitality brought home just a little bit closer to us and we cannot thank them enough.
