We started our last full day in South Africa visiting Media Monitoring Africa, an NGO which seeks to make sure South Africa’s media is honest and accountable. After a very interesting discussion with William Bird, we went to visit the University of Witwatersrand, located in Johannesburg. Here we got to meet with a class of journalism students and their lecturers. This meeting facilitated a discussion between students from both universities about the similarities and differences between these two countries. Once we were done speaking to our peers at Wits, we headed over to Kaya FM; a commercial radio station within the city. Our last stop for the day was the Rapid Lion Film Festival, a special event where we could view the premiere of a new South African film project. After taking pictures at the red carpet, we watched the documentary System in Crisis, which was about the problems with health care in South Africa. We then got to meet the director and have a brief Q/A session, closing out our South Africa experience.
