PROOFREADING JOB APPLICATION MATERIALS:
In class, I’ve tried to emphasize the utter importance of eliminating all errors from job application materials. I want to remind you of the assignment sheet note about “Standards of Correctness” on this assignment:
“I will mark this assignment on a somewhat stricter scale than usual. If any letter or resume contains more than two typographical or grammatical errors, I reserve the right to dock the entire package one letter grade. I will dock the package even more if there are numerous typographical or grammatical errors.“
How to make sure you eliminate all errors? Read it out loud. Or with a ruler under each line. Or read backwards. Find the friend who is the most detail-oriented and have her proofread it. Then get another friend to proof it, too.
And an ad that suggests that a successful job-search requires not only a spotless shirt but also spotless writing:
