1968: Original Olmsted Building

Olmsted Building

Although the University announced the creation of the “Capitol Campus” in February 1966, the formal transfer of the north complex of the Olmsted Air Force Base did not take place until May 12, 1966. The complex was purchased by the University from the United States Department of Defense for just $1 and included 177.5 acres of land as well as 16 buildings. This rare aerial photograph illustrates the three-story “Headquarters Building” (now Olmsted Building) of the former Middletown Air Materiel (sic) Area, also known as MAMA.   The first classes at the newly-created Capitol Campus were held on October 3, 1966, on the first floor of the Olmsted Building.
