As of October 2014, the only way someone using the JAWS screen reader to read a MathML document is with the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer 9 with the MathPlayer 3 plugin installed. This process documents how to un-install versions of Internet Explorer 10+, then re-install Internet Explorer 9.

Note: Please allow about 1 hour for this process as it involves multiple computer reboots.

Check Internet Explorer Version

To check which version of Internet Explorer you have:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Settings link (gear icon) in the upper right corner and select About Internet Explorer. A window will open and show the version number.
  3. Close Internet Explorer if you need to change the version.

Disable and Uninstall Internet Explorer 11 & 10

If your PC has Internet Explorer 10 or a version beyond Internet Explorer 11, you will need adapt this step for the appropriate version. Detailed instructions can be found at Wikihow. The list below is option 1 and is written for Windows 7.

Note: Depending on the on the age of your computer, you may have multiple versions of Internet Explorer you need to disable. Repeat the process below for each version until you have disabled all versions through Internet Explorer 10.

  1. Go to Start Menu and type Programs and Features.
  2. In the left menu, click Turn Windows features on or off link. A new window opens.
  3. Uncheck the option for Internet Explorer 11.
  4. Reboot your computer.
  5. Go to Start Menu and type Control Panel.
  6. Click Uninstall a Program (under "Programs" category).
  7. In the left menu, click View Installed Updates.
  8. Type Internet Explorer into Search Installed Updates textbox in upper right.
  9. Check the option for Windows Internet Explorer 11.
  10. Click the Uninstall tab above the list of programs (after Organize).
  11. Reboot your computer.

Enable Internet Explorer 9

Reactivate Internet Explorer 9

If your computer is old enough, you can see if Internet Explorer 9 now opens once older versions have been uninstalled. If not, skip to the following section.

Download and Install Internet Explorer 9

  1. Go to Download Center for IE 9 at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-9-details.aspx.
  2. Click the option to download Internet Explorer 9. Pick the 64-bit option if it is given.
    Note: Microsoft will do its best to encourge a download of a newer version. Please feel free to ignore.
  3. Make sure the .exe file downloaded includes the name "ie9".
  4. Click the .exe file to initiate the installation process.
  5. Follow the procedure given to complete the installation.
  6. Reboot your computer.
  7. Open Internet Explorer.
  8. Click the Settings link (gear icon) in the upper right corner and select About Internet Explorer. A window will open and show the version number.

Prevent Future Upgrades of Internet Explorer

You will need to ensure that your preferences block automatic updates of Internet Explorer from Microsoft.
Note: These instructions are for Windows 7.

  1. Go to Start Menu and type Control Panel.
  2. Click System and Security link.
  3. Click Windows Update link.
  4. In the left menu, click Change Settings.
  5. In the menu for Important Updates, change setting to Check for Updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them or another appropriate setting (i.d. disable automatic updates)
  6. Check option for Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates as appropriate.
  7. Check option for Show me detailed notifications when Microsoft updates are available as appropriate.

These settings should allow you to filter out Internet Explorer update notifications.
Note: Microsft also provides a Toolkit to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 11
