Depending on your resources, there are several ways to insert an accessible equation into a Canvas page or any other area where the Rich Content Editor is available.
Use the Canvas Math Editor
The Canvas Math Editor does allow you to insert basic equations, and these will be accessible by default. The editor is based on LaTeX, a major industry standard for academic publication in math and science. The LaTeX is converted to accessible MathML for screen readers.
Input LaTeX in Math Editor
If you are accustomed to working with LaTeX, the Advanced View lets you edit directly in LaTeX. You can also copy and paste LaTeX into the editor.

Canvas does allow you to enter MathML code directly into the HTML Editor view of the Rich Content Editor in Canvas Pages.
In addition, Penn State has added MathJax support to its version of Canvas allowing the MathML to be properly displayed in most modern browsers including Google Chrome and mobile devices.
Note: Expanded MathJax support is a customization at Penn State. This utility may not be available in other instances of Canvas outside Penn State.
Upload HTML File with MathML
Another option is to upload an HTML file with Embedded MathML into the Files area. A third is to link out to content with MathML hosted outside of Canvas such as on Sites at Penn State or Drupal.
Convert Between LaTex and MathML
Many equation editors like MathType support the conversion, as does the free Wiris MathML/LaTeX demo.
Note: This conversion is NOT supported by the Microsoft Equation editor.
