Welcome back to another edition of “Bring the old Disney back.” Since this is our very last Passion blog, I had to go out with a BANG! I decided to talk about some favorite Disney movies of all time.
THE LION KING
When I was younger I remember my mom buying the lion King DVD, I swear my sister and I have probably seen that movie over 100 times. I loved everything about this movie, from the characters to the plotline and of course the songs. My two favorite songs from this movie were “Hakuna Matata” and “Can You feel the love tonight”. For those who don’t know, this Disney animated feature follows the adventures of the young lion Simba, the heir of his father, Mufasa. Simba’s wicked uncle, Scar, plots to usurp Mufasa’s throne by luring father and son into a stampede of wildebeests. But Simba escapes, and only Mufasa is killed. Simba returns as an adult to take back his homeland from Scar with the help of his friends Timon and Pumbaa. Even though I have seen this film over 100 times, I still cry every time when Mufasa’s death scene comes on.
FINDING NEMO
It’s definitely been a while since, I have watched this movie, but this definitely a timeless classic. Finding Nemo takes place in the colorful and warm tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef, where a Clown Fish named Marlin lives safe and secluded in his anemone home with his only son, Nemo. Fearful of the ocean and its unpredictable risks, he struggles to protect his son. Nemo, like all young fish, is eager to explore the mysterious reef. When Nemo is unexpectedly taken far from home and thrust into a tacky dentist’s office fish tank, Marlin finds himself the unlikely hero on an epic journey to rescue his son. Sometimes I find myself wanting to be as curious as Nemo, where I just forget everything and journey into the world.
Alvin AND THE CHIPMUNK
OMG! My sister and I had the entire DVD collection for all the Alvin and the CHipmuck movies. I just loved how entertaining and charismatic the characters were. Of course, Alvin was my favorite out of the three. Alvin and the chipmunks follow the story of three talking chipmunks Alvin, Simon, and Theodore who find a new home with songwriter Dave Seville. Despite a rocky start to this new arrangement, Dave eventually discovers that the spunky critters have rare singing talent. When the three perform in front of record executive Ian Hawke, he immediately signs them. Although the infectious group rapidly gains in popularity, their loyalty is soon tested. My favorite thing about this movie had to be the music, recently I found myself listening to “Witch Doctor” and “You are my home”. Also, Was I the only one, when I was younger who thought that chipmunks could talk after watching this movie?
POCAHONTAS
Pocahontas is definitely one of my favorite Disney movies. I loved how it wasn’t only about the typical romance story but also showed the protagonist’s personal journey and connection with her heritage. This Disney animated tale tells follows the romance between a young American Indian woman named Pocahontas and Capt. John Smith, journeyed to the New World with other settlers to begin fresh lives. Her powerful father, Chief Powhatan, disapproves of their relationship and wants her to marry a native warrior. Meanwhile, Smith’s fellow Englishmen hope to rob the Native Americans of their gold. The movie was pretty good, but the story of the real-life Pochantas is actually pretty sad. The real Pocahontas was married off to a white man old enough to be her father when she was a teenager. She has then trotted around as a “noble savage” for a few years before she got sick and died. Her culture was destroyed and her relatives were murdered.
MULAN
From the characters to the plot, this movie definitely can definitely be labeled a timeless beauty. 10/10 would recommend. I loved that The story wasn’t a retread of a familiar Western children’s classic but instead was based on a Chinese folk tale about a plucky Chinese teenage girl who disguises herself as a boy to fight the invading Huns. The Mulan movie was definitely a new direction for Disney’s animation studio, combining the traditional elements (brave heroine, cute animal sidekicks) with material that seems more adventuresome and grown up. My favorite song from this movie was” I’ll make a man out of you”. Unfortunately, I’m embarrassed to say that I have yet to see the 2020 version of Mulan which I heard was really good.
Honorable Mentions:
- PRINCESS AND THE FROG
- Toy Story
- Aladin
- Beauty and the beast
- Hercules
These are all great movies!! Mulan is one of my favorites, too. I also love Beauty and the Beast and Hercules. Really, all Disney movies are good for the most part, in my opinion. I have loved reading your blog this semester! I totally agree that we need to bring the old Disney back, so this has really been a walk down memory lane for me. Great job!!
Finding Nemo is by far my favorite Pixar movie, so I agree with your love for it. I also loved Mulan and “I’ll Make a Man out of You” growing up. Very good taste, and I like this list as a nice conclusion to the semester
I’ve never really been a Disney person, but I absolutely loved Finding Nemo and Alvin and the Chipmunks when I was little. I must’ve seen those movies dozens of times.
The other movies, not as much, but that’s mostly because I was never really a fan of the “Princess” movies. Funny story: when I first watched Cinderella, afterwards, I turned to my mom and said “That was a great mouse movie!”. That’s right: I completely missed the Princess part of the movie.
Anyway, it’s been really fun to read your blogs and think back to all the kids TV shows that I used to watch! Some good, some bad, some ugly, but memories all the same.
My favorite Disney movies are Lilo and Stitch and the Lion King. I love Disney movies and will never hesitate to watch one. All of the ones you picked were great! I like the variety you gave as a close to the semester.
These are all really good movies. I actually watched Hercules with a friend on Tuesday! My favorite growing up was Toy Story- my mom says I literally watched it on repeat. This has been such a fun blog for this semester.
Your blogs this semester really brought out the child in me (and I thank you for that)! I also love the Lion King. When it came out, I went to an old-time theater to see the live-action version, and it was awesome. I also love how the beginning of “The Circle of Life” plays at the PSU football games. Us holding up our pom-poms like Simba is so cool.
