Velvet Brown

Velvet Brown, euphonium/tuba, joined the Penn State School of Music in 2003 and is the David P. Stone Endowed Professor and the associate director of commonwealth music outreach. She was the 2022–23 Penn State Laureate, was named a Distinguished Professor in 2018, received the 2017 A&A Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching, and received the 2009 Penn State Faculty Scholar Award. She appreciates her students, past and present; her colleagues; and the opportunity she has had to focus on excellence and diversity. Her euphonium/tuba studio has become one of the most successful and diverse in the country with many BBIPOC and LGBTQ+ students. She has led them in performances at every international and regional conference for tuba/euphonium since coming to Penn State. Velvet has released six solo CDs and additional CDs with the Stiletto Brass featuring Doc Severinsen, trumpet, and has served as lead jazz tuba with Howard Johnson and as solo jazz tuba with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. She has performed/taught throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, Cuba, and North America.
