Casy Walters

Developmental Psychology (Georgia State University)

Background: Prior to returning to grad school, I worked as an SLP in the schools and in a private clinic. This work cemented my interests in AAC and expanded them to include effects of AAC on literacy development.

Current Interests: Broadly I am interested in expressive language development in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Thus far, this has included investigations into the effects of AAC on speech development in very young children. Currently, I am beginning to expand my interests into narrative language development in children with IDD, inclusive of children who use AAC.

Dissertation Chair: Dr. Rose Sevcik

Presentation Topic: Impact of AAC on Speech Development

Research Challenges: How to combat methodological issues inherent in studies using children with IDD who use AAC (e.g., sample size, non-linear data).
