Experience Improvement of Urban Space through Interactive Landscape

With the development of modern society and improvement of quality of life, designers not only care about physical health of people, they also have paid more attention to human emotional and mental needs.  Furthermore, the functional categorization of the landscape has become more and more specific (e.g. ecological landscape, residential landscape, etc.). Nowadays, interactive landscape design as a type of landscape that is more focused on people’s physical and emotional resonance with the landscape is emerging rapidly, which is different from most of the traditional landscape designs that are more inclined to create an ecological and beautiful environment. Interactive landscape design provides another possibility for engaging people’ s experience. It is not just focused on humans’ passive understanding of one-way information from the landscape, but also pays more attention to introduce reversed information through interactive design methods to improve the interaction between people and landscape. It can be considered as the process of experiencing interaction and communication between bidirectional information and multilateral information.

The paper summarizes four types of interaction from the literature and concludes with different design strategies to facilitate landscape interaction from the case study. Then, based on the literature review, a potential site was chosen to be the design application site. After the site observation, according to the site inventory and analysis, general interactive design strategies were filtered and applied to the specific site to develop a schematic interactive landscape design.
