Boston’s Botanic Bay
The Botanic Bay is a visionary project located in Boston, envisioned as the final jewel in the Emerald Necklace project, and is designed to be a new form of public space that pays homage to Olmsted’s work while introducing innovative concepts. Inspired by trees and parks, this project challenges traditional boundaries and creates flexible spaces that blend the boundary between indoor and outdoor, allowing users freedom in movement, activity, and creativity.
The project envisions the Emerald Arboretum as a space that embodies Olmsted’s spirit of harmonious integration with nature, while pushing the boundaries of what is possible in public space design. It is designed to be a lush and vibrant green space, with mature trees, native plants, and natural features that create a serene and inviting atmosphere. The design incorporates innovative concepts that blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, such as flexible pavilions with retractable roofs, movable walls, and open-air spaces that allow for a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. This unique design approach provides users with creative and flexible spaces that can be adapted to various activities, events, and user preferences.
One of the key principles of the project is the freedom of movement and activity. The design includes meandering paths, open lawns, and interactive play areas that encourage people to explore, engage, and interact with the environment. The arboretum also features spaces for community gatherings, performances, and exhibitions, fostering a sense of community and social connection.
