White after Dark

“White after Dark” is a story depicting the formation of a Sundown Town. The work contrasts the different experiences and outcomes of the residents based solely on race. It also highlights how the history of these towns has been obscured and forgotten. The structure of the story follows a sequence of events common throughout the country between 1890-1940. A Black resident was accused of a crime. Panic spread among the White residents of the town. Finally, the White residents drove the Black residents out of the town. In many cases this was a violent process, often leading to the burning down of Black homes or lynching of the accused. After expelling the Black community, they passed ordinances, hung signs, and threatened violence to keep their town all-White. The White residents were seldom held accountable for their crimes.
