Office of Equal Opportunity and Access
American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting Services
Penn State University has a full time certified sign language interpreter on staff to provide communication access for deaf and hard of hearing staff, faculty, and guests of the University Park Campus during the Fall, and Spring semesters.
Services are dependent on the staff interpreter’s availability. Submitting requests at least 2 weeks in advance will provide the best opportunity to have your request filled.
If the staff interpreter is unavailable for your event, we can contact the interpreting agencies working with Penn State. It is the responsibility of the department and/or sponsoring organization of any event, program, or activity to pay for requested interpreters contracted through an outside agency for an individual with a disability who requests this service.
Requests must be made in a timely manner and follow the procedures outlined in Requesting a Sign Language Interpreter.
Procedure for Requesting a Sign Language Interpreter
Procedure for Requesting a Sign Language Interpreter
All requests for sign language interpreters must be scheduled by contacting the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access or using the Interpreter Request Form found on the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access (OEOA) website. If an assignment request is two hours or longer, OEOA may need to hire a second interpreter to work as a team. Exceptions will be considered based on the details of the request, and OEOA reserves the right to make the final decision.
If OEOA must hire additional interpreter(s) to cover the request, the Penn State University (PSU) requesting entity is responsible for all costs/fees the interpreting agency or individual interpreters charges. The requesting entity must also adhere to the interpreting agency’s or individual interpreter’s Terms and Conditions.
