Elevator Pitch outline (Measures to end Gender Inequality

Copy of Me-too-cover

Many of the most evident representations of Gender Inequality and discrimination stem from the #Me Too Movement. The Me Too Movement originally founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke, who created this movement to support survivors of sexual violence, who were particularly young women of color coming from impoverished communities. But within recent years, in 2017, the movement went global. Millions of survivors of sexual violence, not only in the U.S., but around the globe, took to social media and spoke out, disclosing the harms and trauma they had experienced, and within a fleeting period, hundreds of abusers, majority being men, were depose from their positions of power. Who would have thought that the use of two words can be a force to society allowing women from all over the globe to courageously share their stories.

UN Women states that, “globally more than one in three women experiences intimate partner violence and/or sexual violence in her lifetime.”

Every day women are coming forward sharing their stories of how they have been sexualized and harassed by men who have power over them.

With issues like this majority of the time established systems protect men from taking accountability of their wrongdoings. We live in a flawed system, where patriarchy and hierarchy are at the center of the cause.

Although we have made headway with survivors getting their stories out there and the people who have committed these wrongdoings finally paying the penalty, the work does not end here. Social Media has played a vital role with these courageous women speaking out and I hope social media for this cause can continue to be a force. Joining the Global movement for the #Me Too campaign can continue to allow silenced voices to be heard. We owe that to ourselves and these survivors.

 Thank you.
