I have always been a fan of Childish Gambino and his overall vibe. There’s something so carefree about him that I’ve always been drawn to, especially because I think it shows in his music. I was doing homework with one of my friends the other night, and he played another album by Childish Gambino that I had never heard of, so I decided to explore a little more and dive deeper into his music, so I chose this album to listen to, especially since I had only listened to one of the songs previously. Let me say, the only thing I was disappointed by was the fact that I realized it wasn’t summer after listening to these songs.
Best Overall: Retro (Rough) – I never thought that Childish Gambino would have made a song over a music track like this, but I’m pleasantly surprised. The flow of his rapping on top of this unique beat gives a great vibe that I don’t get with his other songs. Even when he switches to the singing portion of the song, the variety seen with this song alone is fun to experience coming from him.
Most Underrated: Late Night In Kauai – Also featuring Jaden, the song opens with the same bongos and way of speaking that Make It Feel Good ends with, which I already thought was a great touch to the song. The transition between Jaden’s ending and Childish Gambino’s entrance is way too perfect and that automatically became the reason it ended up in this spot. The little touches to this song, such as how and when the bongos drop when Childish Gambino starts his part, all work together to give off an overall tropical, chill vibe that is too hard to go unnoticed.
Most Popular: Sober – I can see why this song is so popular in this album, and it’s popular by a landslide. This song is one that you don’t have to listen to the lyrics to enjoy because the background music and his vocals mold so well together, you can enjoy it no matter what. However, listening to the lyrics does add to the beat change toward the end and makes it a little more special. And I’m not implying that Childish Gambino disappointed, but I am saying that he missed a great opportunity to make the timestamp of this song 4:20 (only by 8 seconds, too) simply to reinforce the lyrics and name of the song.
Honorable Mention: Pop Thieves (Make It Feel Good) – There’s something very different about the background music to this song that makes it very special, and fits the name of the song “Make It Feel Good.” It just fits and suits his voice extremely well, making it satisfying to listen to. I also love the addition of Jaden’s portion of the song, where he speaks over the bongos, it just adds a whole other aspect to the song that I wouldn’t have thought was necessary, but makes it that much better.
Least Best: V. 3005 – Beach Picnic Version – Oh wow do I love 3005 by Childish Gambino. I’m one of those people who love that song so much just because it was so popular a while ago, but it’s still a good song. It’s still a great song, but I’m just not a fan of the version included in this album. The music and vocals don’t match up the same way that the rest of the songs on this album do, and it draws too much attention to this song, sort of making it out of place.
I love the atmosphere of your blogs. I am also a fan of Childish Gambino. I love the honesty and positivity in your reviews of this album. I also really like the layout of your blog and that you added the songs at the bottom.
