Junior Varsity – Junior Varsity

Junior Varsity Makes an Electric Debut With “Cold Blood” / Ones To WatchOkay, I’ll admit, the playlists that Spotify makes for you are always hit or miss. Sometimes, there are songs in there that will be some of your favorites forever, and other times you wonder what their inspiration was for recommending you certain songs. I had to do a little bit of digging because most of the songs I was being recommended were songs I have already listened to by artists I have already listened to, and I wanted some variety. Junior Varsity gives a vibe that is a mix between the band and energy of All Time Low, but sometimes, the vocals and singing style of Machine Gun Kelly. Definitely an interesting combination and overall artist to listen to, but let’s dive a little deeper :).

Best Overall: Limousine – Different than his most popular song, Cold Blood, the vibes are less angry and more pleading for help. He tells a story about how he has huge dreams, but everyone around him is doubting him, and he just wants someone to tell him that everything is going to be okay. Although the production differs in this song compared to Cold Blood, the energy given off by the music fits the song very well.

Most Underrated: Weather – First of all, love the fact that there’s a feature on this song. I think it makes the song that much better, and I’m surprised that this song doesn’t have more streams than some of the other songs on the album. Second of all, their voices go so well together, and I think that with the combination of the two of them, it’s peak MGK. Junior Varsity: Built To Disrupt | Complex

Most Popular: Cold Blood – In a way, Junior Varsity gives off major MGK vibes with this song, especially right off the bat, the first couple lines of the song. Not only does he do this with the way that he’s singing the song, but also the story that he tells. He pissed his girlfriend off and then was found in someone else’s car by a police officer, and when asked for his license and registration, he said “It’s not my car but can’t you see we’re trying to make out here in the back seat?” Major MGK vibes is all I’m saying.

Honorable Mention: Premade – I’m being biased in placing this song here, but something about the progression of the vocals in the song reminds me of BROCKHAMPTON, which should be an explanation in and of itself. I know, I keep saying that Junior Varsity reminds me of MGK, or ATL, etc., but he just seems that versatile and able to fit different music genres and tastes that people may have.

Junior Varsity - Wasserman MusicLeast Best: MJ – The staticky beginning really tripped me up, and the fact that it continued throughout the song was not very nice to listen to. The idea was there, but I think there could have been a different sound that was used to keep throughout the song. The lyrics themselves were extremely simple, talking about Santa Fe and Michael Jordan, but I do wish that it had a different track behind it.
