Lab affiliate Mia Megan Foo received her first author publication in the journal XX for her project titled “Use of Telemedicine Services Is Associated With Longer Time to Initiation of Hormone Therapy in Transgender Teens and Young Adults.”

Congratulations to Mia for being accepted to present her updated independent research project at SAHM’s 2024 conference dedicated to maximizing adolescent and young adult health through structure and agency! We look forward to all that you will accomplish in San Diego this coming March!

USPATH (United States Professional Association for Transgender Health)

On November 3rd, our lab manager Zaine presented his independent research project at USPATH’s 2023 Scientific Symposium in Denver Colorado. Zaine presented an updated version of his previous research analyzing access to gender-affirming breast or chest surgery for adolescent patients in our gender health clinic. His findings showcase that adolescents experience barriers such as long wait times and travel significant distances to obtain surgical intervention. He has submitted his findings for publication.

Pediatric Research Day

On October 20th, Mia and Zaine presented their previously mentioned research at Pediatric Research Day in Hershey Park. This conference is dedicated to showcasing the important research that has occurred within the Pediatric department of Penn State Hershey over the last year. Zaine and Mia were both excided to represent the lab among other quality research endeavors from the department! Dr. Essayli and Dr. Roden also gave talks regarding their research.

New York Academy of Medicine’s 2023 Advocacy in Medicine Virtual Conference

On October 12th, Mia presented her independent research project at NYAM’s 2023 advocacy in medicine virtual conference focused on LGBTQ+ health. Her project focused on factors that may impact the timing of receipt for prescription for testosterone or estrogen-based interventions for transgender adolescents and young adults that did not receive a prescription at an initial medical appointment. Her findings indicate that patients seen virtually had a significantly longer time in care prior to receipt of prescription. She has submitted a manuscript based on this project and awaits review.

Penn State Graduate Exhibition

On March 24th, our Lab Manager Zaine presented his independent research at 2023 Penn State University Park 38th Annual Graduate Exhibition, in University Park. He plans to submit these findings for publication in the coming weeks.

Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Convention

On November 17, our Research Coordinator Marley presented her independent research at the 2022 Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Convention in New York, New York. Her project focused on assessing baseline characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients in our adult partial hospitalization program (PHP) with anorexia nervosa (AN) and atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN). Her findings support the notion that there are few properties that reliably distinguish AN from AAN besides weight. She plans to submit these findings for publication in the coming weeks.

Angelea presented at the World Professional Association for Transgender Health Symposium on Monday, September 19 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, under the mentorship of Dr. Roden.
