Kaltura

Kaltura

Ideal for creating and sharing learning material with students, Kaltura is PSU’s video hosting and sharing solution. The integrated Kaltura Capture tool allows faculty to record screen capture, video, and audio, to create robust lecture and help material. The integrated editing and quizzing tools also enable the creation of interactive videos with built-in quizzes and hotspots. Kaltura analytics ensure faculty can keep track of student participation even in asynchronous classes.

Kaltura is Penn State’s enterprise-level, cloud-based media management platform for storing, publishing, and streaming videos, video collections, and other media.  Kaltura can be used to record video, audio, and screen-sharing, as well as embedding quizzes and knowledge checks in existing videos.

Some resources below may require Kaltura being enabled in your Canvas course, see below for instructions.

Enabling Kaltura in Canvas

Kaltura has two Canvas integrations, which should both be enabled for all Canvas courses where you wish to use Kaltura.

My Media is your private media repository, where you can view and manage all your media stored in Kaltura from within Canvas. When you enable this option, students can also access and record their media from within Canvas. All Zoom meeting recordings will also be stored in My Media

Media Gallery is a course-specific repository where you can share media with students in one central location in the course. You can share videos you record, as well as videos from YouTube and other sources. You can also view data on which students have viewed which videos.

To enable My Media and Media Gallery in your Canvas Course:

  • Click Settings in the Course Navigation menu.
  • Select the Navigation tab.
  • Click the Ellipsis (…) to the right of My Media, then Media Gallery.
  • Click Save.
How to Record Lectures

Kaltura Capture enables you to record your screen, webcam video, and microphone audio, or some combination of the three, in order to post content to your students.  Using Kaltura Capture involves three main steps:

  • Download the Kaltura Capture software onto the computer.
  • From http://psu.mediaspace.kaltura.com or the My Media tab in a Canvas course, select Add New, then click Kaltura Capture.
The application will launch on your computer.
  • Select the inputs you want to record (screen, video, and/or audio) then click Record

Once you begin recording, you can manage the recording and use the annotation tools from the bottom right side of the screen.  When you are finished, click the stop button (square), name the file accordingly, and click Save & Upload.  The video will take a few seconds to upload, and then a few more minutes to complete processing, depending on the length of the video.

Once the video is processed, it can be shared with students via the course Media Gallery, hyperlink or Modules.

How to Create Video Quizzes
  1. Once you have finished recording a lecture, go to http://psu.mediaspace.kaltura.com
  2. Log into your account using your PSU user name and ID.
  3. Click on Add New from the top of the screen.
  4. Choose Video Quiz.
  5. You will be prompted to select the video you would like to use for quizzing your students.
  6. Choose Select located to the far right of the video.
  7. On the left-hand side of the screen, you will see Quiz followed by DetailsScores, and Experience. These three categories allow you to choose how students view the quiz, how they see their scores, if they can have multiple attempts or are allowed to skip quiz questions.
  8. Near the bottom of your video, you will see a green button that says Add a Question.
  9. As you play the video, hit pause at the point you want to add a question. The Add Question button will pop up. You can choose whether you would like to add a multiple choice, true/false, reflection point, or open-ended question.
  10. Don’t forget to Save each question.
How to Enable Captions on Recorded Videos

Once Media Gallery is enabled in the Canvas course, instructors can create a rule for automatically ordering captions for all videos placed in the gallery. Here is how to enable automatic ordering of machine-captions.

  • From the Media Gallery, select the options menu in the upper right and click + Services Ordering Rules.

  • On the ordering rules page, select Submit at the bottom (1).  This will create a rule (2) that English captions will be ordered for all recordings placed in the Media Gallery.

  • Once automatic caption ordering is enabled, captions must be individually turned on for each video in the media gallery. To enable captions on an individual video:
    • Select the video from the Media Gallery
    • From the Actions menu, Select Edit

  • In the Captions tab (1) Navigate to the Actions pane for the listed machine transcript and click the button to allow Show on Player

  • Once you do this, students will see a CC icon in the video and be able to turn on captions.
