How to Participate in Amazon’s Second Chance Program

Pile of Amazon packages

Amazon is implementing something new called “Amazon Second Chance” to slow the amount of trash produced by packaging. They are giving proper disposal instructions for collecting and recycling multiple different types of packaging, including “Amazon.com packaging” as well as “Amazon Grocery Delivery Packaging.” Certain items like “Bubble-lined plastic bags” come with instructions to “use designated store drop-off locations where plastic film is accepted.” Find your local drop off location here

In a statement from WRAP, a public outreach campaign dedicated to recycling awareness, consumers are urged to “recycle your plastic bags, wraps, and other film packaging at drop-off locations ONLY WHEN AND WHERE POSSIBLE.”

Amazon provides additional statements for items that do not require special instructions for disposal. Under Amazon Grocery Packaging, items like “Prime Now gel packs” have a specific statement that says “Gel packs are not recyclable and should be put in your garbage bin. Check with your local recycling program for more details.” Amazon has made this information easy and simple to follow.

The Second Chance page has pictures of each item and when you click on your desired image it has a specific statement for that specific packaging piece. Amazon also offers Reusable gift bags made from 100% recycled materials. They offer these to limit their single use packaging, but once you can’t use these 100% recycled gift bags anymore, you can throw them out in the regular trash or donate them.

The Amazon Second Chance page also provides ways and sources to recycle other items like electronics and other devices. They offer Secure Electronics Recycling Bins and ways to trade-in old or broken devices for gift cards and or other amazon devices. They have created a website specifically for recycling electronics and other devices, it makes it simple to address what will be in the box and the number of items.
