Students and Staff Dealing with Climate Change

Recently, predictions of Philadelphia’s climate are beginning to come true, such as more frequent snowstorms and hotter years. With yet another snowstorm filled winter ongoing, the importance of climate change in Philadelphia has become more and more apparent.

Penn State Abington has mandated that everyone get tested for COVID, but the recent snowstorms have made it extremely difficult for students to do so. Some students that have scheduled  appointments throughout February have needed to use public transportation, and with COVID still being spread,  it seems as though it’s a step backwards in safety protocols.

Pennsylvania’s Governor Tom Wolf has decided to use a cap and trade system to help mitigate climate change, which is when companies are given an incentive to lower their emissions. Carbon emission is a big issue in Pennsylvania as it is currently the 5th leading state in carbon emitting. The damage already being done though, the situation will only worsen for the time being.

Students and staff should also prepare themselves for next winter which will most likely have a similar climate, but worse. With constant snowstorms, traffic will become more of an issue and public transportation may also have more frequent delays.
