With a little more than half of the season underway, Penn State Abington’s soccer teams have just a few games left to showcase their talent and improve their records. With the men’s team at 4-5-3 and the women’s at 6-4-1, it is more than obvious that their efforts have proven successful at some points, while at others not so much as they have come up short, resulting in a loss.
Reflecting on the men’s team season so far, their efforts have been highlighted in the games they have won against Bryn Athen, Ursinus, Wilson, and Gallaudet. In some instances, for example, the Nittany Lions put forth a good effort in making goals, but the opposing team would come back and consistently be one step ahead of them, like in their game against Neuman, losing 1-2 in overtime. Similarly, in their game against Lebanon Valley, the opponents managed to keep them off the board despite Abington’s efforts, resulting in a loss 0-2. The Nittany Lions are hopeful towards the rest of the games for the 2021 season as they face off against St. Mary’s, Penn State Berks, Wells, Rutgers-Camden, Gwynedd Mercy, and Morrisville.
In contrast, the women’s soccer team has been ahead of the game. In the first win of the season, they were able to showcase their fighting spirit as they struggled to gain ground from their opponents. With increased efforts they were able to do so by scoring a goal in the last few minutes of the game, resulting in a 1-0 win against Cairn, marking their first of many wins for the season. One of their most notable losses this season was their game against SUNY Geneseo. Despite their best effort, the Nittany Lions lost in this shutout against Geneseo 0-8. Although they were able to make six saves, the Knights proved themselves superior and continued their efforts into making goals and keeping the Nittany Lions from making any. This loss proved to have a significant effect on the team as they hoped to improve their record overall. At this point in the season, it’s important they take what they learn and use it towards their remaining games against St. Mary’s, Penn State Berks, Wells, Immaculata, and Morrisville.
Both teams face off against St. Mary’s College of Maryland on October 16th, at Memorial Field in Abington, PA. The men’s game is at 1PM while the women’s is at 3:30PM.
