Thrifting: better for your wallet & the Earth

Hana Oakes

Updating your wardrobe can be a fun activity to indulge in, adding a few new accessories or clothes to your closest. However, it’s not always easy, many big brand stores in malls sport attire that can be more on the pricey side than what you’d prefer.

That’s where thrift stores, such as Goodwill, come in. For example, Platos Closet sells their clothes at about 60-70% off original retail prices. These shops house all different types of clothing with a much more affordable price than any high-end chains.  It’s also an enjoyable experience to have with others; friends can pick from an abundance of options and discuss what style fits their look best.

Not only is thrifting a fun social activity, its also much better for the environment. Many clothes that are thrown in the trash end up sitting in landfills and emitting more green house gases. Thrift shops prevent that by recycling these items of clothing and keeping them away from landfills. Another ecological benefit of thrift stores is that they conserve the water used to make clothes. For example, Goodwill explains how its estimated that more than 400 gallons of water are used to produce the cotton for just one t-shirt.

All in all, thrift shopping is a cheaper, more environmentally friendly way to buy clothes than fast fashion so pop down to your nearest thrift shop and check it out!
