Penn State New Instructional Modes

The University has announced changes to instructional modes which will go into effect in Fall 2023. At its February meeting, the University Faculty Senate voted implement these new modes based on student, instructor and administrative needs.

Although there are few substantive changes some of the modes have become more specific such as Remote Synchronous, Remote Asynchronous, Remote Blended, Hybrid 75% and up Remote, Hybrid 25%-50% Remote, Hybrid 51%-74% Remote.

The dean or chancellor of the college, in collaboration with faculty, will determine the best instructional approach for academic courses.

The following instructional modes indicate the mode in which each class section receives instruction throughout the given semester. They can also be found on Penn State’s Registrar website.

New and Updated Instructional Modes

Remote Synchronous (RS)

Class will meet online on the days and times specified. The entire course will be taught remotely and in real time. Instructors are offering less than 25% of the Remote synchronous course to be taught remotely asynchronous by the instructor.

Remote Asynchronous (RA)

Class will meet online remotely. The entire course will meet 100% asynchronous and remotely.

Remote Blended (RB)

This Remote Blended (RB) course will meet exclusively online. The course provided will be intentionally taught online using a combination of asynchronous and synchronous instruction (on days and times specified). Asynchronous activities will be at least 50% of the class.

Hybrid 75% and up Remote (H7)

Both in-person and online class meeting will occur. Between 75-99%  of the class will be taught completely remotely, either synchronously or asynchronously.

Hybrid 25%-50% Remote (H2)

The course provided will both meet in-person and remote. Asynchronous and synchronous remote teaching will make up just about 25-50% of the class.

Hybrid 51%-74% Remote (H5)

Class will consist of in-person and online class meetings. Remotely delivered synchronous or asynchronous instruction will make up 51-74% of the course.

 

Existing Instructional Modes 

In Person (P)

On the days and times provides class will meet in-person. Instructors can offer less than 25% of an in-person class to be taught remotely that being synchronously or asynchronously.

Video-Receiving (VR)

Shared class that a student attends on the days and times provided. This entire course will be taught 100% remotely. Instructors can offer no more than 25% of material synchronously or asynchronously.

Distance Education (DE)

This will be used exclusively for Law Schools.
