On the first floor of the Lares building, there is a small room with TVs, chairs, tables, and couches where students can go to relax, converse, play games, while waiting for their next class or destress after class.
It’s called The Intersection, and it can be found across from the computer lab. Many students refer to it as “the orange room.” Matt Smith, a student who often hangs out at The Intersection, told me, “The magic thing about The Intersection is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” Though it might not be a good place to study, it has the atmosphere of a quality hangout spot with energetic people and fun games.
The space is considered multi-purpose, and it is open to anyone throughout the day. The Intersection is staffed by student workers who are always ready to chat. Many students go to the Intersection for student held events from gaming to movies.
E Connor, a first-year student who frequents the Intersection, says, “For me, the Intersection is a place in which I can hang out with similar people without being judged by outgroups. It’s a place to nerd out, play video games, and watch stupid TV and still feel carefree and unashamed.”
Many other college campuses have places similar to The Intersection. It is believed that a place to relax is valuable to students. Studies have shown that stress has adverse affects on students and a relaxing spot like The Intersection can help students focus and relax.
