A Step Too Invisible: Safety Concern at the Woodland Building Entrance

outdoor steps leading up to the Woodland building

Penn State Abington prides itself on a campus that seamlessly integrates both functionality and aesthetics. The renowned “Woodland Steps” outdoor staircase is a prime example, leading countless students and faculty to the main entrance of the Woodland Building daily. Yet, an unanticipated design flaw has been causing some concern among those traversing this path: a deceptive raised step.

The Raised Step Leading into The Woodland Building

For those entering the Woodland Building, this step presents no challenge. Its visibility and placement make it easy to ascend. However, the issue arises when exiting the building. From this direction, the step becomes almost invisible to the eye, posing a potential trip hazard to the unsuspecting student or faculty member.

This step’s precarious position, right at the top of the iconic Woodland Steps and immediately before the Woodland Building’s entrance doors, intensifies its potential risk. Moreover, upon entering the building, one is greeted by the entrance to the library to the right, which means that a significant amount of foot traffic passes this step daily.

So, what can be done to alleviate this oversight? Immediate action is required:

High-Visibility Markings: Consider adding brightly colored, non-slip strips or tape to the raised step’s edge. This would enhance visibility and provide added grip.

Signage: Placing a sign or caution board near the step, especially during high-traffic hours, can alert people to its presence.

Redesign: While more drastic, reconsidering the step’s design or integrating it more naturally into the staircase could be a long-term solution.

Awareness Campaign: Using the campus newspaper, social media, or bulletin boards to create awareness about the step can temporarily address the issue until a permanent solution is found.

It’s imperative for the well-being of the Penn State Abington community that these concerns are addressed promptly. Let’s take the necessary steps, quite literally, to ensure our campus remains both beautiful and safe for everyone.
