College Support Groups

Lauren Weber

College can be stressful for anyone and can bring complex and difficult paths. Fortunately, there are free support groups for students that offer a chance to connect with individuals who are going through the same struggles. I’m an intern at the Renfrew Center, where they help females, transgender, and nonbinary individuals with eating disorders. Recently, Renfrew released a free virtual college support group open to all the above-mentioned groups going through a stressful time. The virtual meetings take place on Tuesdays from 3:30 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. You do not need to be diagnosed with an eating disorder or recovering from an eating disorder to take part. If you would more information you can email collegesupport@renfrewcenter.com or visit www.renfrewcenter.com.

For those who want a more general virtual support group, here are a few alternatives open to everyone:

  • Resilience Skills Group- This is an in-person support group offered by the CAPS services on our campus. In this group, individuals will have the chance to learn how to handle life challenges and how to conquer them to achieve success. Each week there is a focus topic for the meetings. The meetings take place Tuesdays September 19th– Oct 17th from 2 P.M. to 3 P.M, and Thursdays Oct. 19th to Nov. 16th from 11 A.M. to 12 P.M. The meetings will be held in the Cloverly Building in room 106.
  • Pathlight Mood and Anxiety Center- This is a free virtual support group for college students/early adults dealing with anxiety, depression, or other related disorders. This group meets regularly on Thursdays at noon. If you have any questions or want to know more, you can email Resources@ERCPathlight.com  or check out their website- https://www.pathlightbh.com/support-group/mental-health-college-students.
  • Live Well Foundation- The schedule for their adult support groups is posted on their website. The organization offers a Live Well Strategy Group that is open to all adults where they can learn skills for managing their emotions and steps to reduce depression and increase their well-being. These meetings are free. If you want more information about this support group, you can email contact@livewell-foundation.org or you can call 267-530-3739.
