Spotlight on Corporate Communications

Undecided major? Not sure what to major in after the exploratory stage? Perhaps you should consider a Corporate Communications degree.
In the Corporate Communications Program, you can learn valuable communication skills and what goes into the making of a marketing campaign, among other topics.
I asked Dr. Lisa Chewning, who teaches communication courses here at Penn State Abington, why students should consider majoring in Corporate Communications and what they can get out of it. She stated, “Communication can be a transferable skill across most industries. This major can help students present their ideas better, especially when it comes to talking to and persuading an audience.” There’s no doubt that communication is crucial to an organization because not only do organizations have to communicate with their audience but with each other as well.

Corporate Communication courses students have the opportunity to create a marketing campaign, create a business plan, and also create a crisis communication plan. These can be added to a portfolio and presented to potential employers to show that you have these skills.

There is a list of career fields you can go into with a Corporate Communications degree:

  • Marketing
  • Human Resources
  • Business
  • Public Relations
  • Event planning
  • Social Media Relations

As a Corporate Communications major myself, I decided to pursue this academic path because previously I majored in business but quickly discovered that this major involved a lot of math. I’m more of a creative person, and what I enjoy about being a CC major is I can still be creative but learn a little more about the business side of an organization. My biggest takeaway from my classes is the importance of media relations and how this can be beneficial for organizations.

I interviewed senior Phoebe Mattia, who is also a Corporate Communications major. I asked her what made her decide to major in this field. She stated, “Throughout high school, I gained a love for videography, I was very much a creative and hands-on learner. As I grew up, I asked myself how is this something I could continue to do while profiting from it.”

Phoebe continued, “I think one of the biggest takeaways has been to collaborate and work with other students as our major is heavy on networking. It’s amazing once you do take the time to collaborate with your classmates. You learn just as much from them as you do from your professors.”

There’s no doubt that collaboration in any career field is necessary. Corporate Communication allows students to have hands-on experience where they can work together on projects and take these experiences to the workforce.
