Building Community Through Sister2Sister!

Kyana Townes

Sister2Sister is a student-run organization dedicated to females creating bonds with each other on campus through events and general meetings. The group’s goal is to set each other up for success personally, academically, and professionally. Whether it is hosting events, organizing community service projects, or providing resources for students, Sister2Sister is committed to making members comfortable and successful.

Every week, a diverse group of females gathers on Teams or in classroom, ready to make a significant difference for all females at Abington. What started as a handful of curious minds has now grown into an influential student organization on campus.

The organizations consist of a President, Vice President, Treasure, Secertary, Event Coordinator, Outreach Manager, Marketing Assistant, Shadow Officers, and team members. These titles are given to the members who are part of the E-board, and the E-board consists of those who are in charge and asked to complete certain tasks to make the org successful.

On the Engage app in Sister2Sister’s bio  states that “Our goal is to ensure that all women of color graduate from Penn State Abington with the skills necessary for personal and professional success.”

Penn State Senior and President of Sister2Sister Tracee Jones gave a personal statement and reported “Before joining the e-board in my junior year, I was a member of S2S since my freshman year. It allowed me to meet new people and be more involved with campus events. Overall, our goal is to increase the retention rates of women of color at Penn State Abington. That said, our community and resources are open to all interested! S2S works to create a safe space for students during our general meeting and larger events.”

Sister2Sister has hosted many events on campus which have allowed the female population to network, connect with others who have similar backgrounds, and meet those who come from diverse backgrounds and different lifestyles from what their use too.

Jones also stated “This semester we hosted our Friendsgiving event, which celebrated community over a meal with traditional dishes from worldwide cultures. We also focus on building up academic and professionalism among our members. As we move into the spring, we are planning our “Women in Entrepreneurship panel” with the intent to give knowledge and resource to students interested in creating their own business. It has been a wonderful experience being a part of this org and I look forward to seeing it grow.”

This statement from the organizations’ president shows how much care the impact they have on the Penn State community. Sister2Sister is a comfort place for any female wondering and struggling about where their place at Penn State Abington should start.

As an active member of the organization, I can proudly say that after becoming a member of this org I have never been surrounded by such staunch supporters and felt like I belonged. Not only has the group helped me with words of affirmation, resources, and comfort, but also with making connections with people who are positively impacting my college life.

My advice to any females who attend Penn State Abington is to join Sister2Sister for the best experience any organization here has to offer you. Also, Male counterparts can join the male based group at Penn State Abington called ‘Brother2Brother’.
