The Resilience Skills Group focuses on developing skills to build resilience to handle challenging life situations and achieve more desirable outcomes. This fall semester, we’re offering two sets of five-session group. There will be a focused topic each week. Any student can join at any point during the scheduled time frame and can attend as many as they choose to:. . . . Tuesdays Sep 19.th – Oct. 17th 2pm-3pm. . Thursdays Oct. 19th – Nov 16th 11am-12pm . . Location: Cloverly Building, Room 106. . . . Join us in learning and practicing skills to:. . Get out of your head and retrain your brain to stay in the present moment. . Get through highly challenging situations without resorting to ineffective coping mechanism. . Learn how emotions work and manage emotions instead of being managed by them. . Improve interpersonal communication. . And more!. . . . Sep. 19th – Mindfulness. . Mindfulness is all about focusing on being present in the moment. Being stuck in your own thoughts can be very distressing. Mindfulness is a research-based strategy that gets you out of your head. It encourages you to become more aware of your surroundings and to live in the moment. . . . . Sep. 26th – Distress Tolerance. . Distress happens. Improving your tolerance to distress can radically change your life for the better. Oftentimes, people use techniques that are ineffective and possibly destructive to tolerate painful emotions. These behaviors become habitual and detrimental to your quality of life. You will learn new effective methods for coping to use in place of those other behaviors. Over time, you can learn to let go of those negative skills and live a better life as a result.. . . . Oct. 3rd – Emotion Regulation. . Emotion regulation is an ability or skill whereby a person manages to keep strong or extreme emotions in check so that they do not become overwhelming. Emotions may still be felt very strongly at times, but you can learn to respond in constructive ways.. . . . Oct. 10th – Interpersonal Effectiveness. . Interpersonal Effectiveness refers to communication and social skills which help us to: Attend to relationships. Balance priorities versus demands. Balance the ‘wants’ and ‘shoulds’ Build a sense of mastery and self-respect.. . . . Oct. 17th – Bring your own topics. . Not sure what skills would benefit you the most? Bring your own topics or concerns to the group and we will target them with various skills from across.
