As some of you know, I am currently in a class called the Centre County Report, which essentially is the capstone broadcast journalism class in the College of Communications. It’s a 6 credit course that meets Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays all at Innovation Park and we work all week to produce a 30-minutes, live, newscast every Friday at noon. This is a class that I’ve known I’ve wanted to be a part of since I was a freshman here and I could not be more thankful that I get to be part of this class.
At the beginning of the semester, we had auditions to see what positions we would be rotating through over the course of the semester. I ended up with reporting for the first seven weeks, anchoring and reporting for the next three, and then producing the last three shows. I am so fortunate to be able to work in all of the capacities of CCR. This past week was my first week anchoring the show and that was a ton of fun.
Through CCR, I’ve had the opportunity to cover many stories– from the HUB construction, to Centre County PAWS needing volunteers, to Penn State’s response to the YikYak shooting threat a few weeks ago. I also spent this Saturday on the field during the football game. My classmate and I signed up to shoot the game this week so our sports team can make it into a story for Friday’s show. It was tougher than I expected — but so much fun.
This coming Tuesday, I’ll have the opportunity to be part of our election day coverage, working all day to cover different polling locations, create the story in the same day, and then being one of two field reporters who go live during our election show, which will air from 8pm to 11pm on Tuesday. Tuesday will be a long day, but I’m looking forward to the challenge of covering election day.
Next semester, I’ll actually be continuing my CCR career as one of two executive producers of the show. We will be in charge of helping our professor work with students on writing scripts, telling stories, being natural on camera, and more. I am looking forward to the challenge already!
